What RPGs genres are lacking?

The Grinning Frog. Hey there, We've produced a range of mainly solo RPGs stretching from our zombie franchise - Zilight to Sci-fi exploration with Starship Scavengers. I personally, prefer solo games its easier to play at anytime plus I don't have to spend time trying to organise a group together just for people to drop out for whatever reason. Anyways, I'm trying to look for something new and I feel it's very rare to see an orginal idea something fresh; for instance I love Cyberpunk and as far as I can see most of the games are set during the 70-80s era it would be interesting to see a more modern day setting.

I'm open to try anything, What genres do you think are lacking? Or any genres that you think haven't been explored yet?

Given the more than 10,000 RPGs that have been released... most everything's been covered. Even the TV Evening Soap has a Dallas roleplaying game... (it uses scene based resolution, and was from the early 1980's!)

That said, some genres are not covered well.

There are several IP franchises from TV, Film, and that are not themselves covered, but they almost always have some genre-mate game.

Action movies aren't covered very well, IMO. In fact, for me, only Extreme Vengeance and HKAT really come to mind. Games like Feng Shui and Wushu ostensibly cover that ground, but they're more martial arts RPGs than action movie RPGs. The movie part is an important differentiation.

For me 7TV from Crooked Dice nails the movie/tv aspect better than anything but it isn't an RPG, more wargame. I'm not sure how making it an RPG would make it better.

There is definitely a wide spread of rpgs, I guess our question was about where are they the thinnest - in the sense of lacking. One could argue that the world doesn't need another fantasy rpg for example!

Hmmmm…

Weird West
Pre-European expansion New World
Hard sci-fi post collapse/colonial survival
Hard sci-fi early solar system exploration & expansion
Classic murder mystery
Villain-centric organized crime

  • Hopeful dystopia
  • Historical fiction, w/ or w/o speculative elements (e.g. Night Witches, Eat the Rich)
  • Asian-inspired, court intrigue or palace drama (options exist; their rules aren't built well for it)

It is getting much better but wuxia, kung fu, and similar genres I would like to see more of. Gangster done really well (not comic book style)

I haven't seen much for Pulp Adventure games. There were a couple, way back when, but aside from the WEG D6 versions of BloodShadows and Indiana Jones, I've seen nothing really in the pulp adventure that wasn't Call of Cthulhu. Certainly no Tarzan or Solomon Kane.
Not even the kickstarter modules seem to be going that way.
