Weird adventure ideas

What odd and weird adventure ideas have people done? And to serve as an example here is what I just ran tonight.

THe group is investigaing a character named Elbin who lived many centuries ago. Instead of just giving them the info I had a story teller start the story and then have the players play characters in the story. But because the story teller was relying a story and playing on the audience the characters being played were based on the characters the story was being told to. Instead of just giving them a new character sheet I gave them a sheet with the mechanical changes to their own character, which were not great changes, and allowed them to play with mostly the mechanics they already knew. Back grounds were also suipplied.

The way it played out worked well. They were playing their new characters but also occasionally voiced in for their normal PCs. The Bad guy in the story was a character played by a character their PC's think is evil. A friendly NPC of the PCs turned out to betray the characters of the story for reasons they can see the NPCs eventually one day falling into. There were a lot of parallels between the real campaign and this story. Plus I built the new characters around what I think the players would enjoy. For instance I have a husband and wife in the group and with her permission I had her character have a secret crush on his. All the while his character was very much a Casinova like character that would never even occur to him to commit to one woman. The fun was he had no idea through the info on his character sheet of the conflict so it turned out to be a fun surprise. Another character had magical oaths that he had to obey to everyone even the betrayer so he had to work around that and it is something I knew the player enjoyed doing.

Honestly, it was the type of adventure I've wanted to do for months but didn't know if it would be successful. I like to occasionally role play out side the box and just try new things. I'm very pleased it worked and worked well, but I had a plan B all ready if it failed.

So, anyone else do odd things like this with your adventures?

No one ever tries to shake things up a little and do things in a wierd way?

A group of grown men sitting around a table rolling strange shaped dice and playing swords isn't wierd enough for you? :p

Friends of mine ran a game in a long-term campaign where the PCs were teleported back in time into the bodies of their ancestors. They had new sheets ready and everything. It sounded like tons of fun, and I wish I'd thought of that.

Our DM once had a game where our existing characters were all transformed into little fey guys... we all looked the same (with additional fey features). One was a leprecahn, another changed to a grig, a pixie, and the like... gaining the powers, size, etc.

We had to find some crystal or something and fight some Drider type person to get back to normal. It was quite an ordeal for my 1/2 Orc fighter to be small and wimpy.

He worked the process like reincarnate - removing physical traits, then reapplying the fey racial traits... very fun.

Okay, seems like not a lot of people do this type of thing. As a Player are you open to this type of game or do you perfer to keep things more normal?

It was less an adventure and more of a scene, part of an M&M PbP I ran a while back. One of the PCs, a young boy, part of the group which is being hunted by both good guys and bad guys, was recovering in a hospital. From the moment he woke up, the game was actually a dream he was having, though no one knew that at the time but me. Some wierd stuff started happening and then the bad guys broke into the hospital and started killing the PCs (I was totally fudging all rolls against them, because it wasn't real). A friendly, but comotose, NPC (something of a mother figure to the young PC) was awake and staring at the PC, telling him it was all his fault that his friends were dying or dead. Then he woke up.

I fooled them all. And they totally hated me for it. :D
