Weapon Focus/Specialization and Rays

Hi folks.

The 3.5 PHB states that you can take the 'Weapon Focus' feat for Rays.

Does that mean you have to specify 'Ray of Frost' or 'Scorching Ray'
when you take it (for example)?

What about Weapon Specialization? Can that feat apply to Rays as well?

No; all you need specify is 'Weapon Focus: Ray,' and the feat will apply to all rays.

Yes. In the Complete Arcane there is a feat called Ranged Spell Specialization that requires Weapon Focus: Ranged Spells and caster level 4th, which might be a better feat for ya. Though there are no improved versions, so if your DM is a stickler for RAW, it might not.

Yes, what Tequila said. However, by the time 4th level rolls around, another 2 damage from specialization might not be worth the expenditure of a feat - might be better used for Greater Spell Penetration or improving your save DCs via Spell Focus.

According to one statistical analysis I've seen, beyond Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, and Weapon Focus, there isn't much use in ranged combat feats for ray/orb/touch-spell casters.

That analysis, however, considers ONLY the PHB feats.

I will not even take weapon focus.

That another +1 to attack roll is not so important at the level you already have Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot.

If you want to improve the damage of your ranged attack spells via feats, it is much better to take the feats which improves your caster level (heritage feats, reserve feats) and/or metamagic feats (empower, maximize, energy admixture, twin spell, etc.).

For sure, an optimizer would tell Melkor that Weapon Focus/Spec are a waste. They'd also tell him that as a caster he shouldn't be dealing damage at all -- that he should be pwning encounters with save-or-lose spells.

Well, that's 3e for ya.
