Warlock Pirate

First Post
We are about to start a seafaring campaign soon I am thinking about creating a warlock. The character concept is a seafarer either be it a pirate or privateer. Could warlocks work in a seafaring campaign with the right choices of invocations? I want him to be good in combat, melee and ranged, and have invocations that will benefit in nature situations in both land and sea.

thanks for the help.

Hell yeah they can. Brimstone Blast to catch sails/ships on fire; Eldritch Spear to deliver it at 250' range; Baleful Utterance to break key things on a ship (belaying pins holding in ropes, etc); Breath of the Night to create a fog cloud to hide your ship in; Leaps and Bounds for a big bonus to balance, jump, and tumble - all of which are useful on a ship; Spiderwalk to ensure you can climb the mast and riggings easily; Fell Flight or Flee the Scene to ensure you don't need to climb the mast or riggings and to save yourself if you get thrown overboard....

And those are just least and lesser invocations. Another neat thing about a warlock is the fact that their abilities are all left pretty open to interpretation as far as the visuals. With a little work you can come up with a nice pirate-y flavor for all of his tricks.

Zurai hit the high points. Warlocks should be great at sea. Just add some salty flavor to their abilities, like black tentacles using octopus-like tentacles.

Yeah, Chilling Tentacles just BEGS to be made kraken-flavored.

Complete Mage adds one that is needful for any pirate warlock: swimming the styx. Water breathing and a swim speed as a least invocation.

Warlocks are notoriously weaker at melee than ranged combat.

Eldritch Glaive from Dragon Magic is the best for melee - gives a reach weapon that lasts a round.
