Warlock Eldritch Blasts

Elf Witch

First Post
Can someone help my DM with a question. A player playing a warlock just reached the level where he gets two attacks around.

He seems to believe that this allows him to throw two blasts. The DM believes this is not so but can't find backing for it other then the fact that wizards , sorcerers, druids, and clerics can't throw more than one spell a round.

Who is right on this?

An invocation/Eldritch Blast is treated just like a spell with a Standard casting time. Thus it can't be used more than once per round, although it is subject to the feat Quicken Spell-like Ability.

This. Your DM is right. All SLAs are cast as standard action (hence only one per round) unless explicitly stated in their description. You can get Quicken SLA (Eldritch Blast) feat and be able to cast it as swift, allowing you to cast 2 EBs per round, although only 3 times per day. There is also an epic warlock feat that allows two blasts per round, but since he is 8th lvl, that is a looong time away.

If the player does want to full attack with it, have him look at Eldritch Glaive in Dragon Magic, though. Turns your Eldritch Blast into a spear-like weapon with reach for the round, allowing you to attack with it like a weapon.

Eldritch Glaive is a very potent ability for a warlock (and if the DM allows it) could be wisely put to use with the weapon focus "touch attack" and short haft from players handbook 2.

The Warlock will thereafter have a weapon that does catastrophic damage (By the time he hits level 20 he'll be doing an average of 94.5 damage per round with a full round attack (assuming he lands all three hits). And keep in mind these are melee TOUCH attacks... so they're relatively easy to land. Also... they crit for double damage.

Then it starts getting interesting. Throw "Utterdark Blast" into the mix.

Now you're doing 96 damage per round average.. but also draining 6 levels as well.... and these also crit... in other words... if you land a critical you drain 4 levels instead of 2.

The go get yourself the ability to cast Divine Power (giving you FOUR attacks for an avg of 126 dmg per round, and draining 8 character levels from your opponent). This can be done via wondrous item feat and crafting an item that will cast Divine Power x number of times per day.... and keep in mind divine power's bonus to your base attack bonus is based on the PC's character level, not caster level.

Yeah, baby!

yeah!

I wouldn't waste feats on Weapon Focus or especially not short haft. Power Attack, on the other hand, is golden. Don't know if it works that well straight Warlock, but if you mix in some full BAB classes (especially Lion Totem Barbarian for Pounce) it can get good. Just remember that Warlocks are all squishy and gooey inside with their HD and low armor. A tank you are not.

Thank you everyone for your answers. I was getting a little upset over his character which is level lower than my sorcerer doing 10D6 a round when he hit with both blasts.

I had nothing in my spells that comes close to that damage at this level.

Warlocks basically get half level d6 damage. Evocation spells by spell level 3+ are doing CL d6 damage or better, generally. How do you have nothing close to that?
