Vancian Magic?

All along, WotC has said that the Vancian system would be reduced in importance. Sounds good to me, but has the new spell slot/level system been shown?

So far, I haven't seen ANY real hints of a vancian system of spell slots. Did I miss it? Will it fall into the Utility;at Will; Encounter and Daily powers? Has it been secret so far?

Spells work under the same system as At-Will, Per-Encounter, and Daily Powers. There are however some differences.

Wizards get At-Will, Minor Action Cantrips (things like Ghost Sound, Mage Hand, Light, etc.) and their Daily Spells are from a spellbook and can be swapped in and out daily.

As for as I know, it's all At Will, Per Encounter and Daily spells. The have a spell level system, but it's 1-20 now.

Not that I have any special inside information or anything. I haven't played the new system yet. Thats just what I gather from the publicly available information.

Personally, I wish Vancian magic good riddance. It was time for a change.

The daily powers for wizards are memorized out of a spellbook. So a wizard has as many "slots" as any character of his level has daily powers.

There were no spell slots in any of Vance's writing, by the way. >_<

If anything, it sounds a bit more Vancian than it was before (at least, in terms of the Dying Earth and Cugel the Clever). In the Dying Earth stories, magicians could only "encompass" a few spells per day, which they studied from their books. It was never like D&D where all your magical powers are such spells, or that you get a bunch of them. Really accomplished magic-users still only got a few of them.

Then you also had magical rituals. These could be performed even by rogues such as Cugel, though in his case he generally muffed it so bad that he ended up getting hosed. But these were not memorized spells... they required chanting and other such ritual practices.

Then you had reference to "cantraps" which were evidently minor magic, but never really explained.

Separate from all this was the magic of the Archmages, who figured out how to bend extradimensional beings to their will and do all the heavy lifting for them.

Actually, I beleive there's been hints as to how EVERYTHING is Vanican now.

Per day/ Per encounter/ At will
2/1/1

Looks very much like

1st / 2nd / 3rd
2/1/1

to me in every way. 4e= everything is Vanican disguised as somthing else... kinda like how Attack of opportunity went backwords and dropped the "of" and now is somthing "completely different".
