Tropic Thunder

Anyone else looking forward to this movie?

If you've never heard of it: a group of arrogant A-list actors are hired to shoot a ridiculous, big budget Vietnam war epic. They go about filming, but their set location ends up being in the middle of a warzone, and suddenly these very same actors have to actually fight.

If you can guess who the middle actor is in the photo in this article, I'll give you a cookie.

I saw a sneak preview last week- it is hysterical. From start to finish. A bit crude at times, but if you like irreverent humor, go see this movie when it comes out. Well cast, well written, well paced, some great cinematography early on... can't say enough about it.

If you liked Dodgeball- you'll really like this.

[EDIT- It wasn't so much a sneak preview as it was a test screening, but it was free all the same. And based on audience reception, it tested very well.]

I hope it won't stir any controversy, like when Ted Danson showed up in blackface makeup as a birthday surprise for his then-girlfriend Whoopi Goldberg.

It's not done in a malicious way at all. There's another black character in the movie (played by Brandon T. Jackson), and part of the humor/conflict is how they interact. It was handled pretty tastefully, IMO- even for a comedy (or at least much more tastefully than the numerous White Guy Pretending Like He's From the Hood comedies, such as Malibu's Most Wanted).

Wow... Ben Stiller is ballsy.. Congrats to him for taking on one of America's double standards which deal with race.... Hopefully no extreme-leftist African American Rights activists will decide that Ben Stiller was being racist.

Wow, that's great news Drew! I'm jealous that you already got to see it. Those are pretty much the same sentiments I've heard from viewers at other screenings:

I really think this will be one of my favorite comedies when it's all said and done, based on the premise and what I've read so far.

One of the things that I love about living so close to L.A.- plenty of opportunities for free screenings.

(Of course, much of the time, those screenings aren't worth 2+ hours of your life. Timeline? Species 3? Blearghhhh! I did see Dodgeball as a screener, though, so...)

I jumped at the chance to see Tropic Thunder, though, and was glad I did.

It's one of those movies where when you see the trailer (I haven't seen any yet, myself) you might think- all the good parts were probably in the trailer. Fortunately, that's not going to be the case, based on my viewing. It was pretty much nonstop fun throughout.

Looks like it's not supposed to be out until August, which seems strange. I'd have expected it a bit earlier... though come to think of it there are a bunch of high-profile movies coming out this summer, aren't there? (Dark Knight, Iron Man... what else?)

How can you forget Indy?
