D&D 5E Tiefling sub race and variants

Miguel Borges

First Post
Tieflings got a lot of sub race options from UA, like Tieflings from Zariel and other devils.

My question is, since is a sub race, can i still apply the Sword Coast adventure guide options with it?

Like for example, a feral zariel tiefling

who gets +2 to dex +1 to int and the zariel spells instead of the normal infernal legacy

Ultimately it’s up to the DM. The subraces are Unearthed Arcana, so there are no “official” rules regarding how they interact with other elements like the SCAG Tiefling variants. That said, the purpose of Unearthed Arcana is playtesting, and if you’re modifying the race with the SCAG variant opinions, you might not be getting a very accurate test experience playing with them. It’s also worth keeping in mind that, if the Tiefling subraces ever do get published, you won’t be able to combine them with the Tiefling variant rules in Adventureer’s League because that would break PHB+1.

If the rest of your home group wants to use every rule or proposal available ("kitchen sink" end of the spectrum), you can.
If the rest of your home group wants to limit itself in some way - hardcover only, or 'must be Officially Published', or whatever, you can.

If you want to create a character to play in AL, it will have to be compliant with AL's rules.
Similarly for a character that moves between home groups: it will have to be compliant with the house rules.

Before SCAG was published, I started a thread of tiefling variants, which all replaced the Infernal Legacy spells with spells from some other theme.
There wasn't much interest at the time. Maybe people have since had their eyes opened to the possibilities?
If you took proficiency in Search EnWorld, you probably can find my old thread. Hopefully you will draw inspiration from it.
