D&D 5E Tiefling Characters

Warpiglet-7

Lord of the depths
Hello all,

I am generally a variant human player but am about to start a tiefling.

I was just interested in roleplaying ideas and personality quirks you might have used with this race. I have to have a fun personality.

also interested in your experiences with various tiefling subtypes! I have been torn between Zariel and glasya. I think they would play differently. Levistus looks fun too...

I mean you can have the Tiefling being a number of things: You can flavor it as a Fey'ri, as a Succubus, or even a Baatezu/Tana'ri whose physical form has been twisted/reconfigured into a complete and unfamiliar form due to going beyond it's alignment.

I played a Fighter/Rogue Tiefling not long ago. She was Lawful Neutral, to reflect her strict control of emotion for fear of letting her demonic heritage surface. (She fought with a spiked chain, but I rolled a disproportionate number of natural 1s, and the other party members would have to roll a Reflex save to avoid being hit.)

I have a Glasya Tiefling Gloom Stalker 5 / Battlemaster 4 / Cleric of Order 1 / Divine Soul 3. She is Neutral good and worships Asmodeus.

She is descended from Glasya and Asmodeus, and believes that he serves a 'necessary evil'. His demands for control are demands for fair compensation for the service he provides. The mortal constructs of Good and Evil that pain him as a villain, when he and his devils serve such an important cause, are unfair and shortsighted.

Trying to put myself in her shoes and defend her beliefs within the game has been an interesting and sometimes amusing challenge.

Tieflings are the main 'persecuted race' in 5e (drow being a close second) - so most of the rp from their race has to do with how the react to that status. I usually make them bitter under a layer of friendliness, myself, but you could have them genuinely fighting against the reputation or baldly embracing it.

This also means you really want to talk to your dm about what kinds of racism the character will face and make sure it's something you'll have fun with. The extremes include "every peasant will attack you, fighting to the death, because they don't realize you're not an actual demon who's come to destroy all living things on the plane." If that's how your dm runs it, make sure that's what you want to play.

And while most of my tieflings have an evil streak, I make sure they're not stupid about it. They're willing to hurt people, they might even enjoy it, but they know society doesn't like that so they keep it to a minimum and are aware of the consequences of going too far. And they fully understand the value of allies.

But both of those add up to: if they do decide to hurt you, they won't stop at hurting you a little. It'll be painful.

Latest idea: a winged tielfing who got her wings cut off and is adventuring for a way to restore them.

I played a tiefling and took the Sword Coast Adventure Guide alternate physical features to look like a Satyr, complete with (not-magic, darn it) pipes. Bard of Whispers - I can bend your mind with my music.
Mythic Odyssey of Theros will remember that.

I played a tiefling named Tethren in a Greyhawk campaign. He was the product of a breeding program by House Naelax (of the former Great Kingdom) that was trying to create a perfect vessel for manifesting an aspect of their s patron, the devil Baalzephon. Tethren was then groomed to embrace his inate, infernal magical ability by his uncle (his parents didn't fare too well), but after an incident where he became temporarily possessed he decided to flee from his home in Kalstrand and the machinations of his noble family.

He valued freedom as one of the highest ideals (especially after being extensively controlled by his family and his experience of being possessed). He tended to be cautiously optimistic and generally affable. While accustomed to the gawking stares and xenophobic whispers of strangers, he suffered a some melancholia and frustration because of it (even if he put on an outward smile and was outwardly upbeat). He was constantly looking over his shoulder, in constant fear that his family would catch up to him.

While I used the standard Asmodean tiefling, I used the variant appearance from SCAG. He has small horns, fangs, a thin tail, and cast no shadow.

Theres a table that has a d100 list of different Tiefling traits. Im looking for it but like most things I cant. Basically it was it represented the different lineage of the race so they all werent the same. If I can find it I'll post it.

Found it
