D&D 5E The Troll miniature - then and now

I was just going through my miniature collection, when I was struck by the difference in scale between these two troll figures.

On the left is the original D&D Miniature Troll from Harbinger (2003); on the right is a Pathfinder Battles Troll Champion from Shattered Star (2013).

Huh. Troll figures are a big bigger now... (to be fair, there are smaller trolls in Pathfinder Battles as well).

Just looking through my "giants" minis, I count:
22 ogres, 17 trolls, 8 hill giants, 7 stone giants, 6 frost giants, 4 fire giants, 6 ettins

Cheers!

And to be fair, the larges in Harbinger were quite small. Even the base size is smaller than what it is now, which is weird since it should be standardized to 1" squares.

A lot of the large sized figures are almost the size of the old Huges. I have that troll from Shattered Star as well as the Mountain Troll from the War of the Dragon Queen.

The Mountain Troll is just a smidge bigger.

The new Beholder from the Rage of Demons set is about 3 times as large as my old Beholder as well.

You need to clean that base on the PF troll, no excuse for a dirty mini :p

One of the things I really like about the new D&D mini's line (Rage of Demons in particular) is how the mini fits the scale.

When 3.0 came out it equated monster size category with set sizes. Then 3.5 made them all square. No longer was your dragon 80 feet long and 10 wide. And minis followed suit. I have older lead giants that are 4-5" tall and they weren't cloud giants or other of the larger ones from the D&D side.

And to be fair, the larges in Harbinger were quite small. Even the base size is smaller than what it is now, which is weird since it should be standardized to 1" squares.

The smaller base size was intentional; it allowed them to be placed in "stands" for mass combat and have more of them in a unit. (See the Miniatures Handbook of 3.5e!)

Cheers!

I think the smallest troll I have is the Pathfinder troll from Heroes & Monsters that was a large medium. The troll champion is really a huge on a large base (it's about the same size as the huge mountain troll DDM released).

I'm very much in favour of larges on medium bases and huges on medium bases; the larger the base, the harder it is to use on a battlegrid.

Cheers!
