The Shadowfell version of Underdark

First Post
So we know that WotC expanded the role of the Fomorians to answer the question "Who lives in the Feywild version of Underdark?" But as far as I can tell I haven't seen any mention of the Shadowfell version of Underdark.

Will there be one?

I can't see any reason why there wouldn't be

Who lives there?

Something pretty nasty I imagine...

Off the top of my head I can't think of an iconic monster that fits the bill and doesn't already have a place. Perhaps a cabal of Lichs? Duergar? I think moving the mind flayers and aboleth there would be cool, but I think they already have them in the normal Underdark...

Other possibilities?

Hmm. All kinds of really horrible stuff, I'd imagine. Good question, though.

Death giants, maybe? I mean, they could be the through-a-glass, darkly, of the giantish world.

Dark ones, dark creepers?

Nightcrawlers/fliers/walkers?

Icky things.

I'm pretty sure someone at WotC mentioned them as being in the Shadowfell.

In trying to think of monsters to populate a Fey Underdark, I realize that D&D has already raided so many of the old myths and legends for material that there's hardly anything left. Everything I think of already has a place, whether on the Feywild surface, the world, the Shadowfell, etc.

There sure are a lot of environments to populate in the new cosmology ...

EDIT: Hmm, the Elder Styric Gods and their servants (for those who have read David Eddings' Elenium) seem like a good choice. What he calls Trolls are pretty much just Fomorians by another name though, so that's already in there.

eddings trolls

Er, no, actually, they are not much like fomorians. No evil eye, Hairy, immortal, crude, no magic powers beside immortality. On the other hand troll clerics do seem to be able to call on their deities (once they are released)

Closer parallel would be yeti: trolls and humans are described as evolving from same root in Tamuli and Elenium.

If you are referring to belgariad, the trolls are not mentioned much. the Ulgrath is a bit more fomorian-ish: it talks, its misshapen, its BIG.

Deep Gnomes

Aren't these both good races? Or quasi-good?

Or is there a method to your madness that I'm overlooking? Are you suggesting that because the world and the feywild are dominated by good or neutral races, the bad guys end up in the Underdark, but that since Shadowfell is dominated by evil (or evil-curious) races that the good guys end up in the Underdark??

Hmm... that could be interesting, and it might be easier to find something to stick into that slot (like the deep gnomes).

I must think on this...
