The New Argonauts (OOC Thread)

First Post
O Muse! Sing of heroes,
champions all-
former pupils of the wise centaur Chiron,
molder of men, maker of legends.

tell of how Chiron summoned them,
from far flung lands and cities
to aid him and save the world of men.

Sing then Muse, of Fate,
of great deeds and trials and glories,
sing of the New Argonauts!

Howdy!

I'd like to make a return to PbP here at ENWorld and run a game based on Sean K Reynold's The New Argonauts which is now a free down load at rpgnow.com.

My last foray apart from lurking here at the site was an Eberron Story Hour a couple of years back.

Anyway, Ive been thinking of doing a low powered Heroic game and the setting of Mythic Greece sounds cool.

So....

CHARGEN:

Im looking for at least 3 players max six

Classes per the New Argonauts, including Hellenic Sorceress. Variants from UA will be allowed: The Totem (or perhaps in our case, Icon) Barbarians, the Thug Fighter and the Wilderness Rogue.

Feats and skills will be drawn from the New Argonauts pdf, the Core Rule Books (or the d20 srd)

Roll your stats per the DMG dropping lowest rolls- I trust you :)

Characters will be level 3 with starting wealth for that level (2700)

Characters will be lesser bloodine scions of the Gods, and all former students at the academy of Chiron .

I will be using the variant rules presented in The New Argonauts.

Please no magic items at character creation.

I am looking at using the Black Company equipment rules for exceptional mundane items, once I get pricing info from Fenris.

GAME INFO:

The game will be set in Mythic Greece mostly around the Aegean.

Posting is "casual". I will shoot for twice a week upfdates but will slow or speed up if I am able to acomodate the PC's pace. If I have no response in three days from a PC I will probably post just to keep the game from stagnating. But Im a working Dad so I understand how life can be, so no penalties or anything like that.

PC's can make their own rolls for checks or combat. Please use an online roller like Invisible Castle and start a log in your character's name. I will do the same but reserve the right of DM fiat and secret rolls.

Anyone with a different idea or suggestion concerning rolls is welcome to speak up.

CHARACTER ROSTER (thus far):

Blackrat as Aeaxeos, Spartan, Barbarian 1/ Fighter 2, Lesser Scion of Ares

Fenris as ??????, Rogue 1/ Fighter 2, Lesser Bloodline Apollo

GMVictory as Gradian, Rogue 2/ Fighter 1, Lesser Bloodline Hermes (Dex)

Milhouse as Seraphea Hellenic Sorceress 3, Lesser Bloodline Hecate

Douane as Mantikus(?) of Crete , Barbarian 1/Fighter 2, Lesser Bloodline of Minos?

GAME LAUNCH:

Recruiting will close on Feb 3.

Shooting for Saturday Feb 9 game start No hurry work on your PCs and familiarize yourself with the pdf. If we have to we will push the start back.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to the gods per the pdf rules may do so since you had to travel to see Chiron. Please note that you did and the size of the donation on your character sheet.

Thanks!

I'm a huge fan of Greek mythology, so I downloaded and looked at the sourcebook. I have to say that I was a bit underwhelmed. The fact that it reduces playable classes down to 4, the barbarian, fighter, rogue and new Hellenian Sorceres, took a lot of the interest out of it for me. I think if I were to design my ideal Macedonian Adventures guidelines, I would create a whole new set of classes, with new benefits. Trying to fit medieval fantasy ideas into literary Ancient Greece just doesn't seem to work.

Good luck with the game, and know that there is interest for the concept, if not the execution in The New Argonauts.

Would you be open to non-magic classes from other D&D books, like the Scout from Complete Adventurer, or the magicless Ranger and Paladin from Complete Warrior?

Sounds like a blast. I'll have to dust off my copy of Edith Hamilton's Mythology to brush up. But I can work in a casual game.

Downloaded new argonauts, and will most likely go for a fighter. As for rolls, which method were you considering from the DMG? 4d6 drop lowest?

To answer in as order as I can:

Id like to keep the classes per the New Argonauts pdf. Partly out of flavor" and out of simplicity so all have the same access to the same stuff ( if that makes sense.) I know this gives fewer options as a standard game but the feats can allow for some customization- (hey im used to a more "high" fantasy game too).

Secondly, roll per the DMG roll 4d6, drop the lowest.

As for how Americanized, I view this as a fantasy setting like any other, albeit more low powered. I am not trying to recreate the Illiad or stick to historic Greece. Im not trying to go over the top ala Xena, but I will try to appeal to the sensibility of a modern audience.

No need to be a scholar or afficianado of mythic Greece, society, politics or any of all that..

The game is based on mythic Greece which gives us an open, shared and somewhat familiar background in which to work. Its a place of sophisticated cities, sparsely populated countrysides-a setting (if you will allow) of a few points of light in a dark world.

The Hellenes of this world probably worry more about centaurs, Amazons and the mysteries of Hyperborea than Persia, if you follow.

For my part Im open to incorporating as much as your characters contribute into the "canon" of the setting, which I feel is appropriate given how many authors in ancient Greece contributed the old myths. This gives us alot of room to have fun in.

2 quick announcements-

First the best analogy Ican come up with is the flavor of the game is that it will probably be more Clash of the Titans or akin to the Sinbad movies for man vs monster adventure, not "Mazes and Minotaurs".

Second Ill leave this recruiting thread open till say Sunday Feb 3. So chime in with characters or questions.

I'm thinking about playing a Rogue, and have some questions about bloodlines. As having lesser bloodlines, does that also give us the benefit of the minor bloodline for our diety, or are thye mutually exclusive? Also, is there any way for us to gain greater bloodlines?

Milhouse similar to the bloodlines in Unearthed Arcana, the lesser bloodlines are mutually exclusive from the others. The lesser bloodlines seem to be the standard power level and will probably fit best for the flavor of the game. There will not be opportunities to gain greater bloodlines later.
