The Luck Stat

The luckk stat is an additional stat rolled like normal during character creation.

Each bonus your luck stat has gives you a pool of luck points which can be used once per day. You pool equals the stat bonus. You may use any number of your current luck points per turn, however once they are gone, you cannot use them fro the rest of the day.

All luck bonus's must be declared before rolling.

So a character with a 16 in luck gets 3 points which they can augument any roll. yes that includes damage rolls. May also be aplied to a spell DC, or any other DC the character has "created". So his poison dagger could get the bonus, but could not augument someon elses.

A negative modifier in the luck stat gives the DM points which to penalize your rolls. Usually used when it resaly matters.

[Houe rule]A DM must state before you roll. if you rol before the DM has a chance to say anything, re-reoll.[/house rule]

What do you alll think???

Sounds nice and simple to use.

As for the DM demanding the use of a luck penalty I see some problems, because the DM has to keep track of negative luck modifiers in the party. Not such a big matter at all, especially if each player himself notes how often he was forced to take luck penalty that day.

Luck should only matter when dice are rolled, so luck mods shouldn't add to save DC or the like. Resisting spells, poisons,... should be modified only by the victim's luck.

So to keep it simple I'd suggest a character may apply his luck mofidier on any one d20 roll each day (or perhaps more often depending on luck or character level). In addtion a DM may force a character to apply his luck mod , be it positive or negative, whenever he sees fit.

The decision to use luck or not should be made after the roll is made, which meens a big boost for characters with very high luck score. But would you raise your luck score, if it was of no use most times?

Hope I added something useful,

The reason I allowed it to be used in the case of DC's is that sometimes your luck is dependent on your enemies luck.

I do liek the once per day idea though. Making them all burn up at once. Per haps allow them to be used more times per day as the character gains levels. Or some such thing...por even feats. Bad luck would just have reduced effect. Instead of another use per day, not useful to an unklucky character, erduce the bad luck penalty.

When used on a d20 roll, the luck increases the natural roll, meaning critting on a 19, and rolling a 18 with a luck of +2, gives you a crit.

And eprhaps random luck modifiers used by the DM. Be careful here, as it is easy to play favorites.

Its generally a bad idea to put the pressure on the DM. Either he uses the negative points at a critical time, and then is a bunghole, or he uses them at weaker times...in which case the negative mod isn't negative at all.

But it is oh so great so see the fighter in full plate charge Count Whatsiznames, and trip and fall right at his feet.

Ok, perhaps this for a change.

You gain a luck bonus, usuable once per day, as normal. If you have a luck bonus, you also gain that many bad luckpoints, usuable by the DM as normal. If you have bad luck, then this doesn't effect you.

Chosen of the Fates
Prereq: None
Benefit: You gain a +2 bonus to your luck atribute. This increases your good luck by one, and your bad luck by one.
Special: You may gain this feat multiple times, its effects stack.

Bountiful Luck
Prereq: Character level 6th
Benefit:You gain one extra use of your luck bonus per day. So you may use it twice per day instead of once per day.
Special: You may gain this feat multiple tikmes, each time allowing you to use your luck on additional time per day. However, to tak it the second time you must be 12th level, and to take it the third time you must be level 18. You may take this feat once per six levels there after.

Make Mine Owne Luck
Prereq: A luck bonus penalty, Character level 6th
BenefitYou lessen your bad luck penalty by one.

Thoughts about this?

I use luck similarly, however instead of using the stat mod as a floating die mod, we use them much like action points. Negative luck gives your opponents action points.

I too use a luck attribute in the IMC but it has two parts to it.
First, you have Base Luck: This is the average of all of your other six attributes. This determines how many luck points you recover for each day of rest and how many you start out with.
Second, you add your level to the base to determine your maximum luck points. So normally, a first level character has a base of 2-3 and 3-4 luck points.

To use, you must declare you are using luck and how many points; up to 5 points can be used on any die roll. The points added are treated as part of the die roll itself. Therefore, if you roll a 16 and had used 5 luck points you rolled a Natural 20 with 1 to spare. Since we use exploding rolls that 1 point left over adds to the next roll. Therefore, if you roll a 16 you got a 17 to follow up the 20. Really helpful for confirming criticals or hitting really high AC's.

Last thing, all expended luck points are restored to full once a character sleeps after gaining a level, otherwise you gain your base luck points back per day.

I use a luck "attribute" but as you spend the points they are gone. You normally start with 7 points. As you level you can get more luck points, usually at the expense of something else. In most situations it's basically used as a mulligan, 1-2 points for a reroll for example. One area where I find it a nice extra attribute for defining things in a game is for the fey, they have alot of luck (which is what makes them so difficult to deal with) that replenishes once in the land of fairie. Keep a fairie away from their land too long and they become rather weak opponents.
