The Kalevala, Finnish gods and stuff

Zapak Vim

First Post
Hi everyone,
Does anyone else use variations of the old Finnish pantheon from L&L (1st edition) in their game? And have they made up 3.5 edition stats for the gods and their religions??

I've been reading the Kalevala (there are a few english translations on the net, and I have a print copy as well) and I want to update my campaign stuff to 3.5 edition stats but it seems the L&L stuff was a bit inaccurate (ie Loviatar and Kiputytto are seperate beings in L7L, but in the Kalevala theyt seem to be the same deity. The L&L version of Loviatar has gone on to feature in the Forgotten Realms stuff
Has anyone already done some work on this? If so, Id be keen to help throw some ideas around

The domains might be in an old issue of Dragon that came out around the time of Demigods and Dieties 3.0. There was some other pantheons in the issue. Mine is at home so I can't check.

that would be interesting. :) and you could always modify the FR version of Loviatar, just to make that a little easier on you...

We've got info here (scroll down to Finish) and here.

Our cleric types (which can be ignored) are explained here

Haven't done much with it in play, but are starting a PbP campaign close to "Finmark", so it might see some use

Thanks everyone, and Mike if you could look up that old dragon mag that would be great.
I have written a whole bunch of stuff which I will post here another day to give you all an idea of where I am heading with this. IMC the main religion is based on what might have happened if pagan finns had developed into the medieval catholic church. Sounds weird but it works!

From reading the kalevala and doing some research, there are some bits in L&L that are wrong or not as interesting as the real kalevala myths

Tapio, the forest god, is not in L&L at all. I have him as Neutral, and the big guy in charge of all the druids.

Ahto, the water god. Im thinking of making him Neutral, not NG.

Hiisi, my favourite CE god. he seems to be more of a forest god that is indicated in L&L, which makes him a bit more interesting

Surma who appears in L&L as an evil demigod, was actually a large monster who guarded the gates of the underworld. There was an evil demigoddess called Kalma who was associated with him. her name means "corpse odour" (how cool is that?). much more interesting than L&L version.

There were also a whole lot of sea gods and goddesses but until I learn finnish (ha!) I cant seem to find out much about them, apart from the fact that the Finnish navy named most of their WW2 submarines after them..

If anyone is keen on the longer untidier version of my notes, let me know, especially if you are using Finnish stuff in your campaign

until then, Kiitos, hyvaa yota!

We have him! at least for our cleric info (our little descriptive write ups, done a long time ago, do seem to be derived from an earlier TSR work...). I would be interested in seeing the longer notes, either here, or you can send them to admin@terra-viejo.net.

As for "Finmark", I don't think we made that up, it may have been a name for the region
