I'm in the process (ever continuing, as I'm still running the game) of compiling a soundtrack for my Age of Worms game. I've hit up sources as different as Final Fantasy, the Hellboy movie, Full Metal Alchemist, Star Wars and the Pogues for music that sounds right.

New favorite? The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest soundtrack. Lots of good action music - the Kraken's theme is what I'll be using to introduce big bad monsters from now on.

Demiurge out.

I don't tend to play music while I'm gaming. I find it distracting, especially if I try to que up music for while we're playing, but while I'm working on stuff for the game I tend to like listening to instrumental music that matches the emotions I'm trying to convay.

On occasions that I do play music during sessions it's usually only at a praticularly dramatic moment and then I tend to pick classical orchistra music like the 1812 Ovature, sometimes the LoTR sountrack ect.

I'm a big fan of heavy metal during gaming. That means thrash, death, NWOBHM, you name it. Nothing says D&D to me like some good old-fashioned metal.
Edit:Older rap is a very close second.

I like to use authentic early music most of the time. Dorian Recordings has some the best IMHO. However, during combat, I crank up classic metal -- Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and sometimes Metallica. I also enjoy using Clannad & Enya for some Celtic scenes. Oh and of course nature soundtracks -- waterfalls, ocean surf, etc.

Anyone ever see the movie, Kull the Conqueror? They did the same thing. Early Music contrasted with Heavy Metal. I swear the director, John Nicolella must've been a gamer. Or perhaps his experience directing 4 Miami Vice episodes influenced him. Either way I loved it. Interestingly enough, once of the reviewers complained about mixing early music and heavy metal. Some folks just don't get it. . . !
