The best comic books I'm currently reading

Ultimate Spiderman: issue for issue, the best story-telling I've seen in a decade. I wish I could write like this. I have always been a DC fan, but this has me entranced. The same guys are doing Ultimate Six, where several Spidey villains escape from a SHIELD prison and go for revenge. Great stuff.

Barry Ween, Boy Genius: collected in four graphic novels that just keep getting better as they go on (Vol. Four is the best of the lot.) You can't go wrong with a foul-mouthed 10-year-old who's the smartest person on the planet... especially when it's filled with dick jokes. :D

1602: There have already been some threads on this. The Marvel Universe at the turn of the 17th century, written by Neil Gaiman.

Y: The Last Man. Only one guy left on the planet, because every other man spontaneously fell dead at the same second. Great writing.

I'm reading everything you are except Ultimate Spiderman. In addition I have the following on my pull list:

Artesia: This is a fantasy epic involving low magic and high politics. It can be a difficult read since world exposition isn't really handled within the story itself so every issue has to be reread and the appendix notes checked. The art, although in a lovely painted style, also makes things more difficult since male faces can be hard to distinguish. Website: http://www.daradja.com/

Finder: This is a small press comic, detailing a complex and fascinating science fiction setting. The series covers a wide array of human relationships: lovers, mentors, family, and even a person's relationship with books. If you order the collections from the website the author throws in free sketches from the comics: http://www.lightspeedpress.com/

Iron Wok Jan: This is my favorite manga right now. It is a completely insane story of two cooks in the best Chinese restaurant in Tokyo. It's funny, enthralling, and will have you craving gourmet Chinese food. Website: http://www.comicsone.com/manga/ironWokJan/

Also, Ultimate Spider-Man. I've also really been enjoying Ultimate X-Men and the Ultimates. Then again, I've never been as much a DC guy as a Marvel guy anyway.

Love those all (well, except for 1602, I'm waitin' for the trade) but would like to
add:

Gotham Central - NYPD Blues of Gotham City. See how the non-Batcrowd city
protectors deal with the wackyness of the DC universe. Masterfully written by
Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker. My fav title currently (It'll be something else next
week, but y'know).

JSA - It's just so wonderfully pulpy!

Formerly Known as the Justice League - Just so much darn fun!

Astro City: Local HeroesThe current 5-issue mini series is great. The emphasis of this mini series is not on the heroes but on civilians whose lives have crossed paths with heroes at key points in their lives.

I quit buying comics a few years ago, but when I heard Astro City was making a comeback, I had to get it. I agree that Local Heroes is a must read. The only other comic I get is Knights of the Dinner Table, which isn't a comic, per se, but is also a must read, :)

Clearly your taste is suspect because you're not reading Bone!

Seriously, it's a great book that everyone should check out. There quite a few preview pages at the website, just about the whole series has already been collected in TPB's already and the last three issues are supposed to be out by the end of the year (a small miracle considering how Jeff's been going).

So you know Bendis also writes Ultimate X-men (good despite the lack of X-men), Ultimate Marvel Team-up (finished and collected), Powers (one of my favorite books, about two cops who investigate crimes involving super powered individuals), and Alias (will be turning into The Pulse). He was writing Daredevil, but I don't think that's the case anymore. Brian is one of, if not the best writer in comics right now.
