Thanks for sharing your story, Rob. I too got started with an Avalon Hill game. A friend showed me Tactics II and about a month later I ran across Rise and Decline of the Third Reich at a department store in St. Joseph, Missouri. I managed to convince my mother to buy it and my circle of friends began to pick up all kinds of AH games. About two years later we ran into the box set of D&D, branched out quickly into AD&D (around 1979) and it's been a fun 40 years of roleplaying ever since. I just got back from a Pathfinder Second Edition gaming event I run in Quincy, Illinois every month. We had a special character creation seminar I developed to teach new players how to build characters. As I was running it I thought about the very first D&D session I played in and how we built characters that night. We played Keep on the Borderlands, which is still one of my all time favorite modules. We had so much fun learning the game and all those wonderful rules. As the players kept asking me questions today, I kept thinking to myself that no matter how much time has passed, I'm still building characters and having fun doing it no matter what edition or system I'm using.
