Tell me about the terrain accessories...

Every so often I see pictures of peoples games and they have little miniature trees, rocks, and dungeon accessories.

What are these type of things called? I've tried searching Ebay for the trees and rocks but I don't get good search results. Either my search names are wrong or there just isn't much of it on Ebay. Is this stuff expensive?

I'd love to get a nice batch of various trees that I can smack on the battlemat when running forest encounters. Different sized rocks would be great also. Some dungeon pieces would be nice; maybe some stalagmites & columns.

Where's the best/cheapest place to grab this kind of stuff?

Try your local hobby shop that carries model train supplies. They have terrain kits with trees, rocks, and anything else you can think of. Otherwise, you could look for places like Dwarven Forge

Colour me Watson, but for the rocks, you could just use... rocks...

Heh, but real rocks are heavier. The material the fake rocks are made of makes it easier to lug around a big batch of them....plus the versions I've seen pictures of have cool little pieces of grass terrain around them. I'd also like large sized rocks and real large sized rocks would be pretty heavy.

Wait...this makes me sound like a weakling!

Search on "wargames terrain" or "wargaming terrain" or "warhammer terrain" There are several good folks that sell terrain on there. The scenery stuff like trees & plants can be fairly cheap, but things like buildings can get expensive (I'd love to buy a bunch of stuff from Miniature Building Authority, but at $25-$75 a building, it adds up...) And, with the dollar being weak, a lot of the European makers of terrain are no longer cheap. Just make sure you get 25mm, 28mm or 30mm scale stuff.

edited to add - that is search on eBay. You can also do a google search on those terms as well and find individual manufacturers.

For mountain sides, my DM uses aquarium furnerature. Myself, I am heavily looking into Fat Dragon Games. They make some really cool stuff that you can print out on your printer and customize to your liking.

I was just looking at some of that aquarium stuff in a local petco the other day thinking that a certain few pieces would make a nice set of ruins.

Wargames terrain or wrgames scenery in ebay will give you a grat many hits.
I'd also recomend the same in the Google machine, which will lead to manufacturers as well as do it yourself articles.
And real rocks as has been posted make really good rocks

Miniatures Terrain

Check out a site like this one:

http://theminiaturespage.com/workbench/

Found that using the following search terms:

"how to make" game terrain foam

Quite a lot of the terrain you see in the form of rocks, hills, etc. start out as foam, cut (sculpted) to the desired shape, coated with watered down glue and then painted or flocked with static grass.

I would also suggest looking at pictures from wargaming conventions. You can get a lot of ideas from looking at other people's work.

Example, a local convention (Kansas City area) has their gallery of pictures posted here:
