Teleport as Mark and Recall...

Aaaaall right - a new thread.

I frankly never liked teleport "as is". I don't like the possibility of teleporting to somewhere I've never been. And not just for the scry-buff-teleport thingie... Just cause it truly cheapens travel too much.

What I was thinking is creating a "Mark" and a "Recall" spell , a bit like in Morrowind or Daggerfall. Only that you could have several places "Marked" and could recall to any of them.

Of course, I don't expect the new spells to be as high in level as Teleport is now... after all they ARE less powerful.

So what do you think about A) the idea and B) the suggested spell levels?

I was thinking about making them of different levels (actually one idea is that you can teleport any place you've cast a visible Arcane Mark ) ...
which would make "Mark" a 0 level spell...

Get your mind gears spinning with mine, y'all fine people ...

There have been many great threads about ideas about how to modify teleport. Your idea has merit too. The question becomes, at what level do you want characters to move around easily? And if it is a 0th level spell to mark, they'll be marking everything with it....

People have suggested time based; you can only teleport during certain phases of the moon/sun/stars. That teleporting removes you from existance for a certain amount of time, until your destination is under a certain moon/sun/star. That you must first teleport to a collection zone (think transit in airports) then from there to where you are going.

Me, I don't mind teleporting so much. I do like the ideas others have had, and find the various flavours all intriguing.

Keep in mind that Word of Recall is a 6th level cleric spell that does just this. I'd keep Teleport at 5th level and give it unlimited range as with greater teleport (or something else to make it better while it is restricted in this way, perhaps can take even more people or mass?) or lower it to a 4th level arcane spell. I've also had the idea of having only specific locations within a world (similar to ley lines and magical points of intersection or some such) where teleportation may done to and from certain places. As the character's soon discover that behind the tavern bookcase they can travel to the far eastern mountain's icy slopes and a hot spring nestled deep within a mountain valley may they teleport to a far distant desert-land. Interesing way to have characters quest for a teleport location to far distant places (few and far), while small locations exist for many smaller teleports (many and near).

There was a thread about this exact topic a few months ago but I can't find it. Here are some of the ideas I remember....

1) The Mark spell has to be cast on a specific object to "attune" it to that location. The object needs to be in the wizards hand when the Teleport spell is cast. This way, a wizard can Mark pretty freely since the more Marked object he has, the bigger a logistic hassle it will become. This is the Ultima way. The marked object can be bought or sold.

2) Depending on the type of object, the Mark may not last long. Wooden object might only last a few hours, silver and gold a few months, while gemstone might last years.

3) An ordinary mundane object might become attuned on its own if it sits in the same spot for a long time. Thus, the party thief can sneak into the king's kitchen and steel some silverwear to allow the rest of the party to teleport in.

4) Their might be alternative way to attune stuff. For example, wood elves might be able to teleport from one tree to any of that tree's seedlings.

Marking your territory, eh? You just know what I'm imagining as a somatic component as... ;)

The campaign I use to be in but am starting to run is just getting to the level to make teleport possible. I can easily see how it could be put too uses far beyond anything I can imagine, however I also find myself wrestling with the notion of "they've come this far and should reap the benefits". Similarly, I do believe my group is mature and can see them using it as well as needing it.

Nonetheless, I love the flavoring Aaron2 and green slime have mentioned. I'll definately have to look into some of those ideas if only for the pure flavor of it. Not sure what method to us...I'll have to mull over it a little bit.
