Tabaxi character

First Post
So my daughter wants to play as a tabaxi, shes 10 and loves cats so perfect fit. I'm not a veteran d&d player and not the most creative either, so I was hoping you guys could show me some background of tabaxi characters you have made. That way I can show them to her and she can get an idea of where to go. Nature of the content doesnt matter, it can be adult themed if I deem that it's bad enough I just wont show it to her.

This largely depends on class (in my opinion)
But she could be....

Urchin: She grew up on the streets alone (also comes with a pet mouse lol)

Hermit: Lives alone in the woods.

Anthropologist: Studies humans for the Tabaxi People (they normally live on an island)

Investigator: Likes to look into things...

Criminal/Spy: Was caught/framed for a crime.

Entertainer: Likes to make others happy.

Far Traveler: Came from the Tabaxi Island to somewhere else.

Gladiator: Wild Cat who fights for glory!

Inheritor: Somehow earned/was given a special item that she is investigating. My current player is a Tabaxi Rogue and picked this...he has a magic map that was left by his father...it is actually a map of Barovia (They are playing Strahd and do not know it yet)...and until they enter Barovia the map is blank.

Noble: Tabaxi comes from a rich family of traders from their home island.
(This comes with the MOST Starting Gold!)

Pirate: Enough said...

Urban Bounty Hunter: Besides hunting Giant Rats (What Fantasy game doesn't have them) She often tends to those who have bounties on their heads.

I was hoping for a more complete background that someone has done for their own tabaxi character. Unless of course those are complete backgrounds, I'm not exactly experienced in this. I just want her to have some examples to see what notes she should hit in general or maybe spur some ideas of her own.

Thank you for your response!

I think a simple starting point might get you going in the right direction rather than a detailed background.

Soooo....

She was someone's adorable housepet until she became a teenager then they abandoned her in the wilderness outside of town.

What, too on the nose?

Maybe instead of creating a background for the kid, you should prepare a set of questions for the kid, so that your 10-year-old can answer these and create her own background. Kids are creative!

- Were you born in a city or in a farm?
- Why are you seeking adventures?
- Who is your best friend?
- Who do you hate?
- What makes you smile? (And why?)
- What makes you sad? (And why?)

With only a couple of such questions, a background story will soon develop.

Those are some good questions. I wasnt going to create a background for her though, I just wanted her to see some examples to draw on. She is definitely more creative than I am, so I'll definitely leave the making of the background up to her.

My wife plays a tabaxi ranger with the archaeologist background (from Tomb of Annihilation). She is convinced that there once was a far reaching tabaxi empire, pre-dating the elves and she is searching for their ruins.

However, let your daughter dream up her own background - all it really provides is 2 skill proficiences and a (mostly) useless flavor text ability.

I wouldn't worry too much about the mechanical aspects but focus instead on the story as others have alluded to.

Does she come from a large family? Are they still close? Country or city? Is she bold and daring or a scaredy cat and why? Why is her character adventuring and not just curled up in front of a warm fire?

Ask leading questions and let her imagination go. If she wants to be a princes kitten (noble background) that's great, but why is she risking life and limb? Maybe she remembers a warm and loving family but one day found herself on the street. Awesome, you have a mystery to explore!

As far as mechanics, that's the least of my worries when playing with a kid. Start with the story and the rest will follow.

For example, Tom my charismatic rogue (any resemblance to Puss-In-Boots is purely coincidental) has fond memories of a warm and loving home on the outskirts of the city followed by a night of chaos and terror. He found himself alone and abandoned on the streets of the city, fending for himself as best he could. As a moderately successful adventurer he comes off as cocky and sure of himself, but it's really a cover for deep insecurities. His fear of abandonment also makes it difficult for him truly trust anyone else.

So for me, the story comes first and then I figure out everything else next. If your daughter is anything like most 10 year olds, let her come up with a story with some gentle direction from you. Once she has a story, figure out a background.

Snip...so I was hoping you guys could show me some background of tabaxi characters you have made. That way I can show them to her and she can get an idea of where to go.

I don't think they need to be too long, a few paragraphs, eg:

Pockets Ocean-walker
(rogue, bard, fighter)

Pockets grew up on a merchant ship and has spent much of her life sailing the high seas and eating fish. She is good natured and mischievous. Her calico fur is usually a little knotted in places and not always well kept.

In all her travels she has never met another Tabaxi, this curiosity about her own kind has led her to port in search of adventure on land, and hopefully something that tastes as good as fish. One day she dreams of returning to the sea as the captain of her own ship.

Panda Open-Sky
(Wizard, warlock, sorcerer)

Panda got her nickname from the patterns of her black and white fur on her face, although she mostly covers herself in a hooded cloak around strangers.

She has lived in a large city for the past 6 years, sent there by her parents to attend the Arcane Academy when she first displayed her ability to use magic at a young age. She has a real love for games and puzzles and all things magical.

Before finishing her studies she was framed by a rival student (a Kenku sorcerer) for cheating and expelled from the Academy. Since then she has found it hard to trust others and has left the city to start a new life of adventure.

She keeps a feather of the Kenku as a reminder of the betrayal.

Tall Tail Great-Rock
(Barbarian, Ranger, Druid)

The greatrock tribe have lived in the deepest jungle for centuries, a small peaceful village nestled in a hidden valley.

Tall Tail got her name as a youngster due to her long tail that always seems to stand straight up towards the sky. Her fur is a thick orange and yellow, patterned with black rings.

Loyal to her people and an experienced tracker within the tribe, Tail enjoys three things above all else; the Nighttime, Sleeping (during the day) and the hunt. She has left her village behind to explore the 'civilised' lands beyond the jungles edge. She needs to find out all she can and make sure her people remain safe.

I just had a mental vision of a Tabaxi version of Indiana Jones in the opening sequence of Temple of Doom, casually swatting the golden idol off of its plinth to the floor.

...and a second vision of a Halfling version of Short Round.
