T-shirt Printing

So, I'm too poor to take my friends out to dinner for my birthday this year (a tradition I started when I breached the 30 mark in appreciation for their assistance in getting me to that age without major mental/physical malfunctions). My backup plan is to take everyone to see Hitchhiker's Guide (it opens the day before my b-day). I want to build some party favor bags, and I really want to include a custom T-shirt. In building one on a website, I found that the price for 15 or so t-shirts would be about as much as taking everyone out to dinner.

Anyone know of a lower-cost option? Anyone designed their own t-shirts. I assumed there might be a 'spray-on' paint option in one of those craft stores, but my google-fu is not helping me. I'm looking to get it done under $100, and my own time isn't a factor. If I can build them by hand and they look nice enough, all the better.

You can get paper for your inkjet that works as an iron-on. Although I would think the cost of even unprinted T-shirts would be prohibitive, once added to the cost of movies tickets, etc. How nice a dinner do you spring for these people?

It's usually about $400-$500.. but I can't spring that this year. If I can keep the t-shirt costs under $100, then I'll be fine. Movie tickets are cheap where I live ($3 for a matinee).
