Surround sound speakers for playing gaming music?

I play music during our D&D games. My cheap computer speakers recently stopped working.

I don't know a whole lot about speakers, so I'm wondering if anyone could suggest some decent surround sound speakers that I can mount on my walls around the gaming table. I would be using them with a laptop, but being able to use them with a tv if I wanted would be a plus (not required).

I've read some speaker reviews on Amazon but I'm having a hard time figuring out what would be good for this setup. I know I don't want to get any Logitech or Altec speakers. I never crank the volume up and those brands always still seem to blow out or just stop working.

Are you planning on running the music through your computer only or are you connecting it to a stereo system?

I ask because computer speakers are only so good- you have better quality options in standard speakers.

The best computer speakers I've found so far were Sonys, but I got them years ago. A quality boombox might also deliver decent results...plus more flexibility.

I will be playing mp3 files from the laptop. They don't have to be super great speakers; just not crap. I actually keep the volume down fairly low so the music isn't distracting while we play. So I don't need anything that will be rocking the house.

I figure computer speakers aren't that great, which is why I'm having a hard time finding speakers to buy. Anything I see that has good reviews and is around $100 seems to always require a receiver. I'm not sure what to get that can be used with a laptop.

Well, like I said, I'm pretty satisfied with the Sony speakers I bought some years ago. A quick search showed me they have a few subwoofer & satellite computer speaker systems that should deliver everything you need for $140-200 per set.

(And to put my satisfaction with the Sonys in context, the true stereo systems in our house use either Marantz, Bose or both, with a smattering of support speakers from brands like Infinity.)
