Summon rust monster

Given that the Summon Monster spell tends to exclusively summon Fiendish and Celestial versions of animals, and outer planar creatures, that's not a good spot for it, though I was thinking it would be.

Summon Nature's Ally only summons dire and regular animals, so that doesn't work either.

Creating a spell that specifically, and only summons a rust monster would be an interesting concept. I would say that it largely depends on the duration. Having a rust monster for 1 round/level probably isn't hugely powerful, since it's just a CR 3 creature.

If you did that, I would probably make it a 2nd level spell. An iron golem can kill a rust monster in 1 round, btw, so it's not a terribly effective combatant against that. It would be good for chewing through metal doors, or locks.

Probably about 3rd to 4th. The potential destructive power is gut-wrenchingly unnerving.

Yes, it is. Given the challenge rating of only 3, it could be equated to a Summon Monster IV or V. Since it would be used for the sole purpose of eating metal and would be under the command of the caster, I would make the spell level 5th or 6th. However, I don't know if I would make this a spell that would be common, let alone a PC having the spell on her list, as it could be very much abused. Once it spreads about, monks, barbarians and mages might end up ruling the world, and only bastard DMs would set about to do that to the PC fighters and clerics.

Well, Rusting Grasp is a 4th level Druid spell. It lasts for only a single touch, won't affect magic items made of metal, affects a much smaller amount of metal and forces the caster to risk bodily harm to use it (touch attack). Given the much greater damage potential of a summoned rust monster, I would make it a level 5 Druid spell, and perhaps level 6 for arcane casters.
