suicide bomber zombies

Been on the recieving end in a deadlands game, zombies with nitrogylcirin (sp?) bottles strapped to them. I'm still trying to suppress the memory. It didn't end well.

Halo did it.

Shamelessly hotlinked.

I'm just saying. One good gnome necromancer is all it takes.
Good necromancers don't make zombies if they want to stay good, and "suicide" requires not being already dead, but ... it's a classic idea, found in many excellent video games. Icewind Dale I, Starcraft, and even old D&D (the "gas spore" which looks like a Beholder).

I personally enjoyed the variant based on a 2E spell from one of the Wizards Three articles called Boneblast (I think). You could cast it on any unanimated bone as a trap. You could also cast it on an unanimated skeleton, then animate the skeleton (or zombie if there was enough skin still on the bones in question) - when it was dropped below 1/2 hp, it would explode in a storm of bone shards.

I had some evil priests do this with zombies...

Take cadaver, open abdomen, clean like thanksgiving turkey, cast spell on revealed skeleton, get small beer handcask, drink beer, fill cask with contact poison and penny nails, seal cask, put cask in cadaver hollow abdomen, sew cadaver shut, animate zombie, post walking bomb as guard.

My players NEVER treated low level undead the same again.

They have zombies that do this in DDO...so I'd think that it is available in a 3.x resource, probably 3.5.

Pretty much when they get below a certain percentage of hitpoints, they explode with a negative energy burst. Especially nasty because it heals other undead around them.

Hey, hey...look what I found: The Destruction Retribution feat (Libris Mortis)
It's a feat a corpsecrafter can take so that undead he creates have the above added quality to the tune of 1d6 + 1d6 per 2 HD. 10' spread.

I stopped playing DDO before meeting such beasties...entertaining. Some ideas just never die...

Excellent...completely forgot about that. Though I still like mixing it up with physical damage. Death Ward being the killjoy spell that it is. chuckle

You could always have your zombies wear the ever-popular Neclace of Explosive Decapitation. (a.k.a., Neclace of Fireballs)

One of the Corpsecrafter feats in Libris Mortis causes your undead to explode when slain. It's quite handy if you like having hordes of undead followers. The main problem is that it only works on undead you personally animate. If you're into summoning and rebuking it's not much help.
