Suggestions or ideas on how to retrieve a character from the void

As with any campaign sometimes things happen and you are unsure what to do. I have a character who used a Deck of Many Things and pulled the void card. As I do not want to really have that character permanently gone from the game, I have pondered how to retrieve him. It states "not even a wish can bring a character back from the void", but a wish can be used to find out where the character is at and some means can be done to retrieve him. I think. I am apt to make a DM call and say X number of wishes can bring him back or maybe a long danmgerous mission to whereever. Any other thoughts on retrieval or loopholes known?

Step 1. Have a cleric cast Miracle to learn which plane the soul is entrapped on.
Step 2. Learn what deity is most likely tied to that plane in such a way as to perhaps be able to find the entrapped soul.
Step 3. Go to that plane, likely through Plane Shift (if you can acquire the proper kind of key linked to that plane) or possibly through Wish or simply looking for a portal somewhere, on the material, ethereal, astral, or shadow plane.
Step 4. Use Commune or Contact Other Plane to ask a suitable deific being if they know the location of the entrapped soul. Or use Gate or Greater Planar Ally to bring in a solar, pit fiend, balor, ultraloth, arcanaloth, formian queen, rakshasa, coutl, djinni, efreeti, dao, marid, or the like, as appropriate to the plane you and the entrapped soul are on, and ask them if they can find it or find someone who can find it. Be prepared to pay copiously in either goods, souls, or favors as necessary to seal the deal. You might try gating in a marut inevitable, but it'd be tricky convincing the marut that bringing back your friend will serve the marut's purpose of preventing and punishing the avoidance of death (your friend's not dead, just trapped, and will never die so long as he remains so.....). :\
Step 5. Proceed with whatever plan is set forth by the divine being you have gotten your information from. Provided you can trust the source!

As an alternative, just find some way to contact an appropriate sort of deity directly, without the limited nature of a Commune spell, and ask them where exactly to find the entrapped soul and free it. Or go to Sigil, City of Doors, and ask around. You might find someone there who can do the seemingly-impossible and locate or free your friend.

SRD Says...
The Void

This black card spells instant disaster. The character’s body continues to function, as though comatose, but her psyche is trapped in a prison somewhere—in an object on a far plane or planet, possibly in the possession of an outsider. A wish or a miracle does not bring the character back, instead merely revealing the plane of entrapment. Draw no more cards

Looks pretty clear, you can you wish or miracle to figure out what plane to go to next. Says ,basically, the soul is stuck in an object. Sounds most similar to Trap the Soul/Imprisonment.

from trap the soul:
Trap the soul forces a creature’s life force (and its material body) into a gem. The gem holds the trapped entity indefinitely or until the gem is broken and the life force is released, which allows the material body to reform. If the trapped creature is a powerful creature from another plane it can be required to perform a service immediately upon being freed. Otherwise, the creature can go free once the gem imprisoning it is broken.

So you've got to
A) Use wish/miracle to find the plane the object is on
B) Get there and find the object on that plane.(possibly wish/miracle again)
C) Possibly negotiate/fight whatever has said object.
D) Breaking the object near the body would probably be sufficent to reunite them.

There's plenty of chances for loads of gaming in each step. Maybe you're playing FR and the object is in the dragonlance world and your divine magic doesnt work when you get there, or a host of other things that you could do :)

Easiest "solution" Don't use Artifacts without Care.. Specially things like "Deck of many things" really turn the game upside down.

I mgiht allow, wish (find out where he is), a couple of wishes (get him to the nearest plain) wish (bring him back to the plan u want) and another wish for freeing him from the object

This is highly dependant on the DM; he may decide that a deity owns your character soul, and in that case it´s going to be difficult to retrieve. I suggest to start with divinations (commune, legend lore, vision, maybe discern location...) to learn where it´s located, then make a rescue plan.
