D&D 5E Strength rogue and feats

Warpiglet-7

Lord of the depths
I was toying with the idea of a strength rogue.

Maybe assassin, maybe mastermind l, maybe other.

To that end, I was thinking about a brawler who would take grappling feat and then if stuck in individual combat, grapple and round two sneak attack 2/2 advantage.

Has anyone tried something like this? I was inspired by Zarak the half orc assassin but was probably taking mountain dwarf for aesthetics and medium armor.

I'm not sure what grappling fear is. A Rogue dip makes for a great grappler with the expertise, but usually I think it is better to go one level in Rogue and then take Barbarian or Rune Knight. Rune Knight is especially good because you can grapple huge creatures.

Grappling feat, it was a typo

Just trying to make sure I could fight alone if caught

I should have realized that. Now I feel really stupid! That should have been so obvious, I am wondering if you think I was being snarky (I promise I wasn't).

I do not think the grappler feat is worth it. If you grapple someone, you can just drag him next to an ally to get sneak attack (using cunning action dash if necessary), and if you are not going to drag him somewhere you can use steady aim to get advantage.

The other problem you will run into is size. You can't grapple anything 2 sizes larger than you or in most games anything incorporeal, which really limits this ability. You are spending a feat on something that is going to be situational.

I would take tavern brawler over this. If you are not going to get sneak attack anyway you can make an unarmed strike and then bonus action grapple and then next turn you can move him where you need to. You get a +1 to strength. IF you combine it with the unarmed fighting style from a fighter dip you get decent damage with your unarmed strike and 1d4 extra every turn to someone grappled.

My favorite build is a Str-rogue swashbuckler with medium armor and shield from Moderately Armored and the Shield Master feat.

  • You take Expertise with athletics to have a major advantage with the shove bonus action.
  • You can sneak attack even if alone. Or shove prone a target to get Advantage (depending on your position on the timing of that bonus action).
  • You have a great defense: Dex+ medium armor+ shield + Evasion + Uncanny Dodge.
  • The '' taunt'' feature of the swashbuckler is pretty nice for a defender, even more so if you can grab Sentinel in there.

No I did not assume snark!

Yeah, looked at tavern brawler but if I go assassin probably alert is the prime choice…

I take moderately armored 50% of the time for warlocks etc.!

I liked swashbuckler…ability wise, but not the flavor so much. I don’t want to play the charmer! But do like that ability suite…

But maybe moderately armored with another rogue…the AC can’t be beat…

I play them more as vanguards and shock-troopers. Scout with the same setup could be a nice possibility.

Maybe go for an Assassin with Martial Adept and Fighting Initiate for the BM's Grappling strike and Ambush twice per short rest?

I mean I suppose I can flavor it however I like…

But assessing feels more right…maybe
