Disney has announced a new Star Wars movie called Starfighter.

Starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine), it’s set to release in May 2027.

It will take place about five years after Ep IX and will be a standalone story.

Even if the movies are a mixed bag, I really like the sequel era and I'm excited to see this post-sequel film.

And while "Starfighter" isn't a great title, it's a lot better than "The Mandolorian and Grogu," which feels like Lucasfilm just gave up.

What's the track record on announced movies versus completed movies? I feel like 9 out of 10 never make it to the screen.

They get a pass though because of how good Andor was.

Rogue Squadron is probably never going to happen. It was taken off the schedule a long time ago.

I don't know how they could reconcile the legacy Rogue Squadron with the Disney sequels. So little would remain, it makes sense to me that it would be better to ditch the name than face the nerd backlash.

Personally, I'm excited for any new SW project that minimizes Jedi or Sith involvement.

Also, there was a video game called Star Wars Starfighter. It was a console flying game that fell very short of the amazing X-Wing and TIE Fighter computer games, but wasn't terrible. I doubt there's anyyhing from that game that will carry into the movie but I'm hoping for an Easter egg or two.

I heard it was back on the menu, but that was a while ago, so it might have fallen off again.

As I have said elsewhere: I am confused as to how a movie with that title coexists with Rogue Squadron.

Aside from Rogue Squadron being in development hell, we pretty much know what it is: Biggles in Space. (or Fast and Furious, at war, in space, for those too young for Biggles).

The title of this movie suggests it's focused on a specific fighter, which makes me think of Firefox. For those too young to remember that one: cold war espionage, in which an ace pilot is recruited to go undercover and steel the bad guy's secret weapon super-advanced fighter.

Although Top Gun in Space is another possibility.
