I loved Asoka. So did my wife. All I ever thought was "that kicked ass". I loved it. And it logically continued Ahsoka story.
Ahsoka was my favourite character in Clone Wars, and whilst she was underused in Rebels, she was decent. And I'd liked most of Filoni's previous work, particularly those two shows (though I hadn't been impressed by Ahsoka's appearances in Mando, they weren't exactly lengthy), so to say I was disappointed by Ahsoka would be an understatement. It did indeed logically continue the story, but... they lost the character, the personality, the charm.
Almost every supporting character except Ray Wise (RIP) was pretty mid. The plot was a complete and utter mess, full of unnecessary holes and weirdnesses that you could maybe excuse in a show for kids, but not live action for grown-ups. The fights were dire (except maybe Ray Wise's character defeating Ahsoka, that was fairly decent), not even worth having. I've seen backyard lightsaber fights with some FX put on them look better!
What's really sad is, I feel like
approximately the same story just told with Clone Wars/Rebels/Bad Batch-style animation, and with the original VAs, would have been much, much more effective, and probably had just ridiculously better fights, and I suspect significantly fewer plot holes too.
I think The Acolyte made some mistakes by kind of overcomplicating things, going way too slow on the plot, and then relying hard on reveals and flashbacks waaaaaaaay too much, but at least it was trying something.
All this said, I'll probably give Maul: Shadow Lord a chance primarily
because it's animation, not live action.
