First Post
Does anyone know of a Character Generator for Star Wars? If so please let me know because I could use one. Or just send it to me in an e-mail.

Illegal? I had no idea that there were such things for mere character generation programs? Anywho, whatever works the best whether it be legal or illegal, hey what the hell we all have done some "illegal things". And I know I never got it from you. But...what I dont understand is why is it illegal? Send it to ...

Meaning that, since this web site has a good, strong relationship with Wizards of the Coast, it would be best if you guys did not discuss such things ("sure, send me some illegal software!") on these forums.

I think I speak for most people on these forums when I say that I would hate to see Morrus heald responcible for something you (or anyone else) does.

A couple of years ago, someone made a SW character generator called okinardae SW generator. It was an amazing character generator. It even included the ability to make ships, droids, and planets! This was its downfall though...it was too good.

The character generator portion of this program was so damn good that you hardly needed the books to play the game. According to my estimates, nearly 80% of the SW d20 rules had been implemented into the generator. Why bother buying the books when you have all of the rules contained in a free, easily accessible program? Well, needless to say, Lucasfilm didnt like the idea of someone giving away a free-generator that contained all the rules for the game. No one knows for sure if the program hurts sales, but the POTENTIAL for it to hurt sales certainly caused Lucasfilm to act. Lucasfilm asked WoTC to act on their behalf, and have the SW generator shut-down. WoTC contacted the person who maintained the generator, and this person agreed to stop giving out the generator, and to stop creating material for the generator.

Many SW players got ahold of the generator before it was shut-down. I still use it. Its the easiest way for me to make a character. It makes very few mistakes. Another nice feature of the program is that all the data that it uses is stored in a Microsoft Access database, so if you know a little bit about Microsoft Access, you can keep the program updated with the newest rules.

I'm another Star Wars GM, and I still use my copy of Okina-rdae. Now I'd disagree strongly with greymarch that the generators made the books redundant. Okina-rdae could be used to create stats for just about anything, but when it came to actually running the system it had nothing. Not combat rules, movement rules, feat descriptions or anything like that.

My impression is that it was closed down because WotC doesn't have the SW computer products license (which belongs to LucasArts) - only the pen & paper RPG license. And a computer product tied in with the RPG treads on LucasArts toes legally speaking (if not in any actually meaningful way...) So Wizards spoke to Nazgul (Okina-rdae's author) and asked him to take it offline because it was a potential threat to their license. Kinda funny actually, cos they have random character generators in their website archive which arguably come under the same heading...

Anyway, it all sucks, but it's just one of those things you have to cope with I guess. High-level SW is a monstrous pain to GM for if you don't have a way to churn out NPCs, so I'd like to see a decent character generator come out at some stage. But it would probably require some renegotiation with Lucasfilm, and WotC simply doesn't seem to be willing to put in the effort.

I love that generator. It's got a DBM suite so I easily updated the class list to include the PRc's from Power of the Jedi. When I pick up the Heroes Guide it should be quick and painless to update the classes and feats. It's easily the best PC generator for any system that I have ever used. PCGen is horrible in comparison. But to say you don't need the books with it is wrong, unless you know what a lot of feats do without reading them.

If only I had a copy of the install package so I could install it on my laptop...

Unless they asked permission first. In fact whatever Wizards do with Star Wars RPG, even for electronic media like a web page online generator, must go through Lucasfilm Licensing for approval. Unfortunately, one of the drawback when you're using licensed products: they don't give you free reign because the IP owner wishes to retain quality control.

Besides, and to put it in analogy, you don't just take your friend's car and drive it around and then come back a day later and ask his permission to borrow the car.
