Standard Adventuring Gear Packages

I vaguely recall seeing in some book, or perhaps in an online suplemement, a list of standard adventuring gear packages. It basically said "For 50 gp the adventurer has a pack that contains X...." and "For 100 gp the adventurer has a pack that contains...."

I am looking for this for a one shot I am running. Don't want to have to go through and add up all the prices for candles, ink, etc.

Anyone else seen this or know where it is found? Or am I just imagining game books again?

I've seen a pdf like that, I think. At the end of each core class description is a Starting Package. That helps. Otherwise, I'd look in the DMG to see what their pregen characters include.

A lot of it doesn't ever come into play -- especially ine one shots. Why worry about it?

Because at least one of the players a) wants to know everything her chracter is carrying and b) likes to come up with unusual ways to use mundane gear.

I've come up with my own:

Adventurer's Packs

Like spell component pouches, adventurer’s packs are an abstraction. They are assumed to contain whatever a character needs to provide himself with light, food, drink and a comfortable place to sleep, take care of his equipment and personal hygiene, and carry around his gear and treasure. An adventurer’s pack consists of a backpack, a belt pouch, a sack, a scroll case, a flask, a bedroll, a winter blanket, flint and steel, candles, torches, flasks of oil, trail rations, a fishhook, a waterskin, soap, a small steel mirror, a sewing needle, a whetstone, a signal whistle and chalk. In addition, it contains anything an adventurer might reasonably expect to need that is not specifically mentioned in the equipment lists in the Player's Handbook, e.g. a line to use the fishhook, cord or twine to tie things together, rags for cleaning, strips of cloth for bandages, etc. Barring exceptional circumstances, this equipment is assumed to be repaired, replenished or replaced as it is broken, used or worn out. An adventurer’s pack costs 19 gold pieces and weighs 24 pounds for a Medium character, or 12 pounds for a Small character.

Also, it is vitally important that you carry a towel. Anyone seeing an adverturer with a towel will gladly refurbish the contents of his pack, and that is why it can always be assumed to have all of these things. :D

(Sorry, but your pack reminded me so much of Hitchhiker's Guide. <--- Joo Jantas.)

The part of character creation I like least by far is buying equipment (especially if also trying to keep track of encumberance), so I might steal some of these ideas. :)

Alternatively, by now I should probably have made up a standard package of the gear my characters buy every time at the beginning of the game with some money left over for weapons, etc.

You could also just use the equipment from pregen characters, like from the supplemental books or from Enemies & Allies or whatever it's called.

Back in our 2E days, we had this joke called a "Dummy Pack". Basically it was a backpack, blanket, torch, flint and steel, rope, water skin and some other stuff you could buy as one piece for a discount.

The thing that made it a joke was the double meaning involved. Only a dummy wouldn't go adventuring without this stuff. However, the pack included only ONE of many of those you'd need multiples of, like torches, tent stakes, dry rations, etc.
