spellcraft on Boots of Elvenkind?

A Wizard has found some magical boots. He casts detect magic and sees that the aura is a medium magical strength. He uses a spellcraft check to determine the school of the aura. What does he find on the Boots of Elvenkind? According to the DMG, the prerequisites are just Craft Wondrous Item and the creator must be an elf. No spell requirement at all. Should he automatically understand that the aura doesn't reflect a school without rolling a spellcraft?

If there isn't a school of magic specified, and you can't think of one that would be suited to the item, it seems reasonable to assume "Transmutation" as a default school.

Illusion: Glamer (as 'Cloak of Elven Kind' or 'Invisiblity' or 'Silence')
P.158 PHB
"A glamer spell changes a subject's sensory qualities making you... ...sound like something else, or even seem to disappear."

I would have chosen Abjuration myself.

Read what Boots of Elven Kind does.
Then read what Cloak of Elven Kind does and waht is needed to make it.
Then read Invisiblity.
Then read Silence.
Then read about Illusions: Glamers.
Then tell me why you think it should be Abjuration.
I already did most of the work for you in my last post.

BTW -Ahem- PHB p.157 "Abjurations are protective spells."
I have no idea what your trying to do?

Is that a joke???

Nope. The intent of wearing boots of elvenkind is to keep from being heard. Why does one usually want to keep from being heard? To avoid being beaten on by guards and other nasty things. Boots of elvenkind are an essentially defensive item, and I don't see any problem labelling them as such.

Read the Book.

A protective item protects you.
I.e. If 'Boots of Elven kind' "protected you from sound" they would let you resist sonic damage.
That's how protection works, read the book for gosh sakes.
Glamors alter outward perceptions of objects, letting them be "invisible" or "silenced".
The 'Cloak of Elven kind' uses the 'invisibility' spell and it gives you +10 to Hide.
The Boots give you +10 to Move Silently.
But to you, for some odd reason, would make the cloak an Abjuration spell.

Is there anyone else out there!!! AHHHH!!!!!

Although I can see points for both sides, personally I'm going to use Illusion because I think it makes more sense.
