Spell Penetration or Arcane Mastery: Which is better?

I've got a level 9 wizard who's planning on taking a feat to help deal with Spell Resistance. Should I take Spell Penetration, giving +2 to overcome SR, or Arcane Mastery, allowing him to take 10 on the check?

Arcane Mastery + assay resistance. 29 will get through any SR you will likely encounter.

The spell penetration is good if you prefer the law of averages, but that's gonna suck when you absolutely must get your highest level spell to function. And roll a 1. Still the assay resistance overcomes most, if not all, bad rolls. With spell penetration + assay resistance, you should (by the book) never fail SR (because the base SR for creatures will be 12+your level).

[Spell Penetration v Arcane Mastery]

It depends. Do you want an assurance that you'll always break the SR of the more Mook-y creatures with SR? Then Arcane Mastery.

Or do you want a better chance at beating the SR of the big bad creatures? Then Spell Penetration.

That's really the choice you make.

Although, when you add in Assay Resistance Arcane Mastery becomes the obvious choice, like Infinity2k said. But something about that spell doesn't sit right with me...

Waah! I was hoping there was a clear answer. I guess I'll go with Spell Penetration, just so I can make off-color coments about penetrating succubi.

My take:

If you have other bonuses to caster level or whatever (the Assay Resistance spell, a Marshall with the appropriate Aura, an item that improves your caster level, or whatever), take Arcane Mastery.

If you are depending on your base caster level, take Spell Penetration.

Arcane Mastery.

Helps you with caster level checks for more than just spell pen. Like dispel checks and the like.

I prefer Arcane Mastery. For creatures with moderate SR, you never miss a spell penetration roll. For creatures with heavy duty SR, you find out fast and can switch tactics to spells that aren't effected by SR.

Except a pit fiend... but you did say "likely." Depends on the campaign.

I agree. Arcane Mastery is more useful in general.

Both. Arcane Mastery is an excellent replacement for Greater Spell Penetration, but without the original (or some other caster level boosts), many high end monsters will be above your ability to take 10 and defeat. In that case, using Arcane Mastery to find out is actually worse than casting normally.

infiniti2000, thanks for the Assay Resistance tip. I've never even heard of that spell before but it is definitely on my list. I was going to take Spell Penetration and Greater Spell Penetration as my next two feats but this makes them almost useless.
