Spectral Hand and Wands

Good question... :uhoh:

It never occurred to me before, but instinctively I'd allow it for scrolls and disallow it for wands. But I'm not sure why :p probably just because I've always thought wands were too good, and not because of a fair judgement of mine...

Hmm. Good question.

The spectral hand spell specifically references "... any touch range spell ... that you cast can be delivered by the spectral hand."

If I were to allow any items to benefit from this spell, rather than just specifically cast spells, I would limit it to spell completion items (like scrolls) and not spell trigger items (like staves and wands).

Hmmm. So by that reasoning a staff would also be disqualified since it's Spell Trigger. I can agree with wands, but a staff is almost an extension of the user, using a lot of the users own abilities etc. to be able to cast the spells. It's closer to 'casting' than using a wand, perhaps even a scroll.

Yes, I would exclude staves from benefitting from spectral hand.

Scroll-casting is much, much closer to actual casting than using a staff is: you have to be able to actually cast the spell, you need a minimum ability score, it provokes an AoO, suffers from arcane spell failure, etc. That's why they are spell completion, rather than spell trigger items.

Flavorwise, no. The wand requires one hand to employ, so a touch spell is presumably delivered by touching the wand to the target.

I agree with Patryn's reasoning here.

The rules are ambiguous, but my personal opinion is to rule that scrolls are exactly like casting a spell yourself, and that wands, staves, and other magical devices are entirely different. This has logical consequences for Spectral Hand, delivering touch spells through a familiar, and Share Spells.

It was my understanding that Wands used a Command Word to activate?

If that is true (?)- how would a SpecHand activate the Wand?

The SpecHand wouldn't activate the wand. The person holding the wand would.

The question is, "Since a SpecHand can somehow pick up the energy when I normally cast Vampiric Touch, can it likewise pick up the energy when I frotz a Vampiric Touch from a wand?"

I don't think it can. Others may disagree.
