Sonic damage in Silence?

A classic question brought out again for 3.5

Does a weapon that does sonic damage (like flaming, frost, or shock, but with the sonic energy descriptor) do it's extra damage inside an area of magical silence?

The spell description says that it negates a Horn of Blasting...

SRD:
Silence
Illusion (Glamer)
Level: Brd 2, Clr 2
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Long (400 ft. + 40 ft./level)
Area: 20-ft.-radius emanation centered on a creature, object, or point in space
Duration: 1 min./level (D)
Saving Throw: Will negates; see text or none (object)
Spell Resistance: Yes; see text or no (object)
Upon the casting of this spell, complete silence prevails in the affected area. All sound is stopped: Conversation is impossible, spells with verbal components cannot be cast, and no noise whatsoever issues from, enters, or passes through the area. The spell can be cast on a point in space, but the effect is stationary unless cast on a mobile object. The spell can be centered on a creature, and the effect then radiates from the creature and moves as it moves. An unwilling creature can attempt a Will save to negate the spell and can use spell resistance, if any. Items in a creature’s possession or magic items that emit sound receive the benefits of saves and spell resistance, but unattended objects and points in space do not. This spell provides a defense against sonic or language-based attacks.

Can anyone say, 'mislabeled spell school'? I knew you could! ;)

Why would it be mislabelled? Obviously the spell tricks sonic attacks into thinking they don't exist, and tricks people into thinking they didn't just get hit with a sonic attack. ;)

But didn't we all agree in 3.0 that a sword that did Sonic damage worked ok in an area of silence? Maybe it was all just a Figment of my imagination.

Actually, I'm good with it not working - it helps balance out it's other benefits.

I dont recall any such consenus, but it is possible. Lots of random things happen on the boards ;)

Still, silence is a bit too powerful as written, but not for negating sonic based spells, that isnt a problem..

I think not. The language in the silence spell, quoted above, was identical in 3.0 -- albeit similarly hard-to-find.

Well, that's entirely possible.

The Screaming weapon special ability from Magic of Faerun specifically states that the sonic damage is still dealt in an area of magical silence.

On the other hand, the Screaming weapon special ability from Arms and Equipment Guide specifically states that the sonic damage is negated in an area of magical silence.

I disagree. It isn't entirely possible that we all agreed on anything while having a rules discussion over anything vague. That just doesn't happen on these boards. :D
