Somebody refresh my memory here......rules for netheril arcanists?

Question

First Post
Okay i definately remember a book had all the info for the netherese arcanist class(not the PRC of the same name, that is significantly lackluster). Spontaneous casting, large spell slots, etc......like a melding of the wizard/sorcerer classes. It also had lists of the spells that were in existent in the netheril period, and i believed contained specific rules/info on Mythallars.

I think the book also had tons of info on iconic netherese arcanists like the chronomancer. Anyone know the book im talking about?

Im sure its not lost empires of faerun......that book doesnt contain that kind of detail, more on the level of "This is the timeline, this is generally what happened for this empire" so much and so forth. After reading that book im still completely mystified as to why narfell/rauthmaril were fighting(other than "i hate you!" and "i hate you too!"), or even how the Narfells ended up with demonic armies and servants, or any real description of Rauthmaril battlemagic(other than "wow they were powerful").

I think you have to go back to 2e for that

Other than Lost Empires of FR I haven't found any 3e book that covers that time period adequately. Nor have I found any decent WOTC official 3e interpretations of the Arcanist class. But there is the 2e Netheril Age of Magic it had the original Netherese Arcanist class with background information on the time, described important and well known arcanists. A list of spells known in the time of Netheril with their period names. It was part of the boxed set and only contained part of what you're looking for you'd need the entire boxed set to get it all. But the book itself is over on the WOTC site as a free download.

As for 3e conversions, Kain Darkwind did a very good direct conversion of the 2e class from that source on the WOTC boards. It was still up last time I went through there but that was a few months ago. If you can't find it give me a holler and I can e-mail you.

BLATANT PLUG!!! I recently posted an arcanist class that uses a very similar casting mechanic in the House Rule forum. It's meant for an OGL setting I'm building not straight D&D and is somewhere between an archivist the netherese arcanist and the ultimate wizard class from the WOTC boards, but if you strip away the extraneous stuff the casting is essentially the same mechanic. Basically you learn spells as a wizard and cast spontaneously with a spell point system where each spell costs it's level in spell points. Since it's 3e and metamagic exists I allow spontaneous metamagic that doesn't increase casting time.

I believe the book you are looking for was 2e and was a boxed set called Nertheril, Empire of Magic. It was one of the first in the Arcane Age series. As I recall, the wizards could specialize in two schools at once but had to give up all other schools. There were few restrictions of what two schools could be chosen. so Illusion/Necromancy was a viable choice (which in 2e were opposition schools; the Illusion specialist had to give up Necromancy and vice versa).

It's you, theres loads of fluff :). I can pick 20 books which are all fluff mostly or pick 20 that are mostly rules. 3e just gave you the option of picking what you wanted :).

Okay so what 3E book has detailed netheril fluff?

Check Lost Empires of Faerun.

Failing that, yeah, you're stuck with Netheril, Empire of Magic. Though on the up side, it's available for download on the WotC site, if I remember properly.

Ive read lost empires of faerun fairly thoroughly. They generally have "general fluff"......that is to say while they might descript what one of the lost empires was like, its main achievements, etc, they dont go into much detail, and they have a vauge timeline as well. For example the timeline might say "Battle of the Yndarawood, Elves rout daemonic forces", they dont go into detail on how the battle was like, other than who won or whether one side took heavy casaulties.
