Slippers of Spider Climbing question

The 3.5 SRD has the following to say about Slippers of Spider Climbing:

"Slippers of Spider Climbing: When worn, a pair of these slippers enable movement on vertical surfaces or even upside down along ceilings, leaving the wearer’s hands free. Her speed is 20 feet. Severely slippery surfaces—icy, oiled, or greased surfaces— make these slippers useless. The slippers can be used for 10 minutes per day, split up as the wearer chooses."

Does this mean that the wearer can activate/deactivate them as a free action?

The precedent from the Sage is that they would be a standard action to activate or deactivate (as per boots of speed in 3.0 rulings). Apparently 3.5 explicitly changed the language in boots of speed to change that but not slippers of spider climbing, so arguments will probably be advanced in both directions.

Wow ... I never thought that it would take a standard action - that makes sense. Thanks!

I've had ongoing issues with slippers of spider climb in our game.

Question #1 - If slippers of spider climb grant a move of 20 feet, then if someone with a 30 ft movement moves 10 feet, can they continue to move a further 20 feet on the wall as part of that same move action? The climb skill seems to indicate so.

Question #2 - If you take damage, can you be knocked off the wall? The climb skill seems to indicate so.

Thanks!

It looks to me like the wearer has a speed of 20' when the slippers are active, regardless of their speed when the slippers are inactive.

you couldn't move 1/3 your move, perform a standard action to activate the slippers and then move again without a special feat. If you activate the slippers as a standard action, move 10' to a wall, you can continue moving on the wall for another 10'. At least that is the way I interpret it.

I would think ther eis a possibility. Will need to look into the climb skill and such. Definitely if you were knocked down.

It does not even take a free action, much less a standard action. Based on the wording in the description, specifically "When worn...", it seems clear to me that the slippers are use-activated. It even says "can be used", not can be "activated". Using the slippers is therefore "not an action."

Interesting.. If they are 'always on', you can parse the rules to read the only piece limited by time is movement on vertical/ceiling surfaces.

Making your move is 20' all the time....{RP: Due to the slippers velcro like attachment to whatever they touch}. For a limited time the slippers can support you on walls and ceilings.

As to damage, I would go with any attack that would knock you prone would detach you from whatever surface you are on. Involuntary movement, such as Bullrushing, has a chance of detaching you {REF save to keep in contact with the surface in question, DC 10 + STR bonus of Bullrusher or level of spell that caused the movement}

Or, you can rule that they require activation. I would go with a Standard Action to activate. I would also allow the "10' to the wall and 20' up the wall" move.
I would go with Free action to deactivate.. allowign fro some cool tactics while falling from ceilings onto your foes!

Not having this come up in my game {yet}, I dont think either method is very unbalancing. Soon one of my EoM Druids will be casting the EoM version of Spider Climb...
