skyrealms of jorune... any good?

First Post
i still remember seeing ads for 'skyrealms of jorune' in various old issues of 'dragon' as a child, and recently seeing them again in the same issues that i managed to hunt down and add to my collection.
it always seemed interesting, but i never knew of anyone that actually owned it or had even seen it.
(and, just a few minutes ago i saw someone mention it on a thread here.)
so was it any good?
worth tracking down?

I owned the most recent edition for a short time. I found the basics of the setting interesting (humans colonize a world that has natives and other sapient aliens, they create uplifts then Earth blows up and humans react with fear and war with the locals, now it is several thousand years later), but the existance of magic and the way it was written (from the viewpoint of several species) not my cup of tea.

Knobleknight usually has a copy or two.

It's worth picking up for the setting material, I think. I'm not sure that anyone is clamoring to play the system. The setting material makes for interesting reading, and it's not very expensive to find either on eBay or through online stores.

Here's a link to a Jorune fansite... http://www.jorune.org/index.html

That's a good fansite to check out - I'm pretty sure that's Joe... ah, I've forgotten his name. He's a pretty good expert on Jorune, and even wrote for the game when it was in print.

Hi,

I have it. Great art and some interesting background material, but I was never sure what you were actually meant to do with it: what kind of adventures to run etc. It's just so alien and odd. Someone I know tried to run it and said the combat was very deadly - TPK early on in the first session.

I'd like to hear from someone who's run a campaign so I can get my head round it!

Cheers

I got the first edition, and there was a lot to like about it - although I found the system with three subraces of human (one normal, one magic using and one magic-invisible) didn't float my boat too much.

There were some excellent alien races like the thriddle and the ramen, and wonderful monsters like the Dhar Corondon and the Mandare... but (and this is a big but), the campaign setting lacked built in conflict. You read the fully detailed world, but there wasn't really any big conflict to start generating ideas (nor even big opposing empires or anything). Lots of conflict had happened in the past, but strangely none at the time of the setting!

I found it impossibly difficult to get a compelling campaign going at the time, which is a shame.

Cheers
