Silver or Cold Iron Weapons

I'm currently designing a Ftr/Rgr or Ftr/Rgr/Barb as a backup character in an ongoing campaign. Basically, he was a weaponsmith in a frontier town that got wiped out by ___________ while he was away for supplies. The PC will be at least 7th level, but I won't know magic distribution until/unless the PC gets played, so I'm assuming his weapons are NOT magical. Masterwork, on the other hand, is entirely possible.

In accord with his profession (and inspired by a certain Beatles song), Mad Maxwell the Monster Hunter will be dual wielding Mauls (1d10 x 3 Bashing) with Oversized 2 Weapon Fighting and EWP: Maul.

The campaign is a fairly basic homebrew- nothing exotic- but I still need to figure out which kind of material is best for a weapon used by a Monster Hunter. Should they be silver (as per the song), Cold Iron, what?...and as is evident by the blank space in the opening paragraph, no, I don't have any idea what his Favored Enemy will be.

Basically, I'm trying to find the best combo of material and Favored Enemy...you know silver for lycanthropes, cold iron for demons...

Any thoughts?

Cold Iron

I always recommend making weapons out of Cold Iron over Silver because you can buy Silversheen for only 250 gp/pop. However, if your favoured enemy is lycanthrope or the correct evil outsider then go with Silver all the way.

Good luck! =)

If you take the Sense Weakness feat, you don't have to worry nearly as much about materials, so you can just do whatever you want.

Jdvn1: I don't know Sense Weakness. What does it do? This PC will be running lean on Feats, so I'll have to be careful with the selection. Currently (aside from class benefits) its XWP: Maul, Oversized 2WF, WFoc: Maul, WSpec: Maul, Power Attack, Cleave, Favored Cleave and maybe a couple of others (I don't have Max in front of me). I'm also leaning towards Leap Attack, Throw Anything, Brutal Throw and Power Throw.

Daermon: One of each type material may yet happen.

mzsylver: I understand that Lycanthropes are vulnerable to silver. Are ALL evil outsiders vulnerable to cold iron?

It's an often overlooked feat from the Draconomicon (which is an often overlooked book). It lets you ignore 5 points of DR (all DRs) and hardness. Its req's are Weapon Focus and Combat Expertise.

Sense weakness could be a better conceptual fit than Leap Attack. Thanks!

I'll keep that in mind when I ask for final approval of the PC.

To keep in mind, though: I did mention Sense Weakness requires Combat Expertise. Combat Expertise requires Int 13. So if Int is your dump stat, you can't take it. Or you might want to reconfigure your stats.

Yeah, I got that. It will also depend on at which final level this PC gets made.

However, it is a good conceptual choice because it makes him a better all-around monster killer.

Heck, it may be a better Feat choice than the throwing feats...

Instead of throwing his melee weapons, he could just use a bow or crossbow.

Then again, he's most at home pounding stuff with a hammer of some kind...

Decisions, decisions.
