Shuriken as a Melee weapon and Retrieving thrown weapons

So - can you use a Shuriken as a melee light blade? Or it can only be used as a THROWN weapon?

Also - i know the PHB specifically has rules about ammunition being 'SPENT' when used - but im a little unsure about Javelins/Handaxes/Daggers/Shurikens - so if you have a +5 Dagger and you use it in a throw attack - its lost forever?

I'd let it be used in melee combat as a light weapon, to me its like a kunai form naruto.

If the thrown weapon is magical it returns to you to be re-thrown. I try not to visualize the area of effect thrown weapon barrage from one magical thrown weapon. (I think I'll go with enchanted holster that holds 50 ammo, and enchants the thrown weapon while its in the hands of the holster wearers hands and it keeps its enchantment for a throw.)

Well, only ammunition is 'spent', javelins, hammers, hand axes etc, aren't ammunition.

Secondly, it states that any magical item that is thrown comes back to the character automatically. Neat huh?

Thrown weapons are not projectiles, they are weapons, so they are not 'spent'. The magical ones return to your hand, the non-magical ones can be retrieved.

I think a kunai is a dagger. An improvised dagger. It's actually a gardening trowel. A dull gardening trowel. For gardening.

Shuriken, btw, are not throwing stars, necessarily. They're any very small blade that can be held in the palm of the hand, and were usually straight. They served a tactical use as a surprise attack when in the stalking phase of a sword fight.

Anyways, I'd let shuriken be used as melee weapons in my game. I'd explain away the excessive damage using abstract hitpoints and their "surprise value".

The PHB explicitly states that ranged weapons may not be used as melee weapons, so shuriken are thrown only.
