SG: Atlantis - Is Dr. McKay (Rodney) just getting worse?

I love SGA and watch it every week. But my wife and I have noticed that, lately, Dr. Rodney McKay's character is just becoming more and more beligerent, pompous and just plain rude. The episode where he completely mocked a planets religion and was just told to sit in the jumper was stupid. If anyone who worked for me did something like that, they would've been in for a major league ass-chewing.

I like his character, some of the time, but he really, really annoys me and just takes away from my overall enjoyment of the show. It's good to have a character who you don't like and don't trust, see Dr. Baltar on Battlestar Galactica for an almost perfect example, but to have one that is just such an ***hole is something I just don't understand. :(

Yep, I think he's great. Which is exactly what he thinks. Problem is, he's pretty much right. Hence the arrogance added into his already sarcastic attitude. But really, he's not nearly as bad as he could be. :)

I agree he is almost always right. I just think the character goes a little over the top and there are no repurcussions for it. None. I think that's what bugs me more than anything.

Well, really, there out in another galaxy and he's the best they've got. What are they going to do? Send him to his room to think about what he's done? ;)

I know they can't fire him or anything like that. But even a stern talking to is better than what he gets. He gets an "Ok, Rodney" and a "go sit in the jumper" and that's about it. I seriously hope that his rudeness comes back to bite him in the butt.

He does get slapped down, but you're right, there is no disciplinary actions against him.

Which, considering the life expectancy of the average scientist on Atlantis, might be out of mercy.

I like him, he is probably as smart Daniel Jackson was before he ascended. About the religions, they know that most of the religions these people worship are basically gould or Asgard so I can see him having a disdain of religion.

Good point. I never thought of that.

I still don't think that excuses his actions though. When SG-1 visited the planet Thor was guarding, they didn't mock their religion or call people idiots for believing in him. They didn't just assume he was a Goauld and start ridiculing their beliefs. :(

That's probably because Daniel is an archeologist, which means he's facinated by why people act as they do. Rodney is a physicist or some such, which means he's just waiting (impatiently) for people to catch up to him so he can get down to equations and tinkering.

Personally, I love Rodney's character. Sure, if I was on Atlantis with him, I'd probably deck him -- maybe repeatedly. On the other hand, he's the smartest person they have, and has knowledge they can't do without. He knows that, they know that. All he has to do is stay just this side of getting decked. And he knows that, too.
