Been waiting for this one.

EDIT: Not happy that it's PG-13 in the states, but I'll chance $5 on a matinee showing.

I hope this doesn't suck.

IMDB Storyline Summary said:
A 14th century Crusader returns to a homeland devastated by the Black Plague. A beleaguered church, deeming sorcery the culprit of the plague, commands the two knights to transport an accused witch to a remote abbey, where monks will perform a ritual in hopes of ending the pestilence. A priest, a grieving knight, a disgraced itinerant and a headstrong youth who can only dream of becoming a knight join a mission troubled by mythically hostile wilderness and fierce contention over the fate of the girl. When the embattled party arrives at the abbey, a horrific discovery jeopardises the knight's pledge to ensure the girl fair treatment, and pits them against an inexplicably powerful and destructive force.

Cage is actually kind of fun to watch, but his ability to pick scripts... stinks. So, Cage's presence is not a harbinger of greatness of the film.

He does seem to prefer movies in which the hero is actually smart, rather than just muscled and good with a gun, which I wholeheartedly support.

It's been getting the rectal fist of doom in reviews with the best ones saying 'If you can sit through a Uwe Boll movie and enjoy it, run, don't walk, to this' and 'not as bad as "Little Fockers" or "Jonah Hex".

The previews looked good but I'm waiting for video.

The script is no more than it needs to be (thankfully there is plenty of gray between the good and evil), the acting is fine from a solid cast (deep bench, working well with what they are given), and there are some minor twists that probably won't surprise gamers but might stay ahead of a regular audience. The direction/cinematography is good enough and the scenery/landscapes (Eastern European during the middle ages, Middle East during the crusades, etc.) are good looking. Costuming is good and the fight choreography is above average. If they could put this type of thing out each year with the D&D name on it, I'd not be unhappy with the D&D movies. The CGI effects toward the end were a bit videogamey but it was otherwise a fairly straightforward adventure/mission film.

I'm wondering why the director used blacklight illumination in a scene or two. It didn't detract that much, but it left me scratching my head.

It was definitely a good enough movie. Opened strong, loved the first few battle scenes, but they had to get all anvilicious about the crusaders as soon as possible :hmm:. IMHO the Dante's Inferno game inspired animation handled it far better where the audience learned of the main characters specific atrocities over time.

The
Freshly undead witch sprouting its claws. Near the end, the movie did dip a bit in quality notably when they stopped being subtle with the CG. The wolves having "Magic fang"
cast on them worked nicely... at first. Unfortunately during that scene the audience is shown that
the wolves
have this upgrade over and over just in case someone missed it the first 3 times.

The fight with the
Undead monks
felt like something I'd expect to see in Buffy.

The CG model on the
fiend
was good, though with better choreography and voice acting i think there would have been a better finale. but since that's the kinda work done in post, the CGer's had to work with what they had.

I wanted to make some jabs at why some of the critics are going overboard on trashing this movie, but it boils down to Politics and Religion.
