Scorching Ray in 3.0

Longbow

First Post
Is there a 2nd level spell in 3.0 that has similar effects like Scorching Ray (ranged touch attack, scales per level, 4D6, etc.)? The only thing I found was Melf´s Acid Arrow and IMO the damage output is not on par with Scorching Ray. So is there a Scorching Ray or similar spell in 3.0?

In 3.0 the flaming bolts ability of Scorching Ray was actually part of Flame Arrow (a 3rd level spell). In 3.5, they seperated the spell into two different spells. One is Scorching Ray (2nd level) and the other is still called Flame Arrow.

Yet one more irritation I have with the 3.5 spell system  Why can spells not have multiple effects chosen by the caster? Why must everything be seperated out into different spells, making it even harder for Sorcerers?

I think you answered your own question. :)

Add on to that the fact that most of the multi-effect spells had effects that crossed schools. Flame Arrow is a perfect example. The arrow enhancement feature is Transmutation while the flame bolt feature is evocation (or conjuration if you want to be munchkin). Same thing with Freezing Sphere and Polar Ray.

there is a spell in 3.5 that’s on wizards website that does similar damage to scorching ray. its called splinter bolt. its one of my favs. The downside is that you have to hit their actual ac and not their touch, but if you’re a druid with a high dex wildshape it’s not too bad. it has the best critical for any spell I know though.

I dont know what you mean by the 3.0 v of scorching ray though. But here is a scorching ray like spell.

Wasn't there something from FR called Aganazzar's Scorcher which was similar to Scorching Ray?

In 2E (using 3E terminology), at least, it's an emanation (line) that lasts for two round. It's updated in the FRCS ... Or possibly MoF ... :)

I used to *really* like the 3.0 flame arrow for my sorcerers... the scaling for the bolts meant that it was possible to get 5 * 4d6 firebolts at 20th level. Not great if they have fire resistance of any kind, but if not... triply empowered as a 9th level spell for 5 * 10d6 damage (effectively) was nice.

Probably why it was modified, along with stacking metamagics ;)

(n.b. one of the few multi-choice spells left for sorcerers is the excellent Pyrotechnics. Don't go anywhere without it!)

Cheers

Yep. The FRCS. The Player's Guide to Faerûn didn't update it, so it's good as it is.
