What type of sci-fi do you like to play as an RPG? What kind of stuff relay makes you mad when you play a sci-fi game? What stuff do you relay like?

I like the grittier sci-fi more "realistic", i am not a fan of a trillion alien race floating around, I absolutely hate animal people.:D I love games with lots of weapons and detailed combat. But most of all I love a game that allows you to truly play a charter and doesn’t focus on who has the most powerful weapon (I’m talking about you rifts...shutttterrrrrrrrr RIFTS:confused:)

I like posts that are in normal sized fonts ;)

As for my sci fi, I like the science in my sci fi...I like the exploaration of strange worlds and systems and I like the unknown and creativity of the 50's sci fi books

Funny, I was just talking about this with a friend today. I dislike SciFi game mechanics that are really close to being fantasy conventions in futuristic dressing. A bad example would be healing drugs/solutions, etc., that heal wound damage instantaneously (a la potion of cure light wounds). It's not that I necessarily need Sci Fi to be realistic or even plausible, but I like to have a greater distinction between SciFi and Fantasy. Otherwise, I'll just stick to fantasy games. :)

I think for sci-fi to be really fun, you have to take a setting with unlimited potential for growth. That is, the GM has to be able to make up new planets, new aliens, new anything, on the fly, without folks being able to pounce and scream, "That's not canon!" Star Wars d6 is that system for me. Sure, you can play out one of the movies, use traditional worlds, whiz about on speeder bikes, etc. Or you can tell your GM that the PCs are taking their ship into deep space, off the charts, and looking for adventure there. A blaster at your side, a few d6's, and the sky's the limit. That's fun sci-fi for me.

Is Sci-fantasy ok? I like sword and sorcery with blasters. I bought the Dragonstar books from fantasy flight when they had their sale last week. It looks kinda interesting from what little I've been able to read. Its scifantasy with a stellar galaxy ruled by dragons. It uses D&D 3rd ed. rules.

I totally agree with you!

To get back to the topic, I like sci-fi rpgs that have a hard sci-fi veneer. I don't like the Star-Wars habit of having starships the size of a car cross the universe in a few minutes, dozens of alien races that are but humans in funny suits, and inept planets that all have the same climate as southern California.

As long as the game mechanics fit the setting you are playing then I have no problem.

As it is the only Sci-fi games I play are Babylon 5 D20, and very very rarely Star Wars D20.

Now that my retnas (sp?) have returned to normal:

Personally I hate space opera. A single planet or system has so much to offer in terms of development and interaction, I don't see a point to having a planet of the week. That is why I am a fan of Blue Planet and Transhuman Space (I really wish there was more RPGs like those). Gamma World provides most of my fantasy wants (though I also enjoy Oathbound) and even that has a sci-fi veneer (IMCs).

I was actually discussing the distinction between various styles of sci-fi with one of my confederates recently. I am personally a huge fan of the STAR WARS universe, and I love the game, but it feels like more a fantasy in sci-fi clothing, if you know what I mean. I have been thinking about developing a setting in the style of The Chronicles of Riddick, which doesn't involve a lot of aliens. The few non-human elements are more like seriously evolved human offshoots.... I think it would make a very kewl premise for a game setting.
