Sarrukh Adventure

I’m planning – several sessions from now – having an adventure set in a seemingly abandoned sarrukh (Serpent Folk) complex in a seemingly dormant volcano. Help will be useful.

In short, the party will be contracted by a seemingly not-evil sarrukh to investigate the complex and report back their findings. The complex was supposed to be a kind of “bomb” shelter, used in the event of a disaster so some sarrukh could survive, in magical hibernation. That was 34,000 years ago, which was longer than the design specifications.
So even if the seemingly not-evil sarrukh is actually, evil, it will genuinely not know what to expect in the complex. Further, the seemingly not-evil sarrukh is not planning on betraying the party, but a third party will interfere.

So, I can use;

A. Suggestions on canned adventures that can be modified to work here.

B. Failing A, then some suitable maps on the internet and

C. Suggestions about what is going on.

I would go for the volcanoe remaining dormant, because the evil fire deity to which it is linked is kept satiated with some evil rituals. For example, it could be 100 victims are sacrificed every 100 years, and the next sacrifice is coming soon. Of course the trick is that the fire demon is slowly awakening and the volcano shaken by tremors, and some small lava eruptions, and what not. But if the fire demon is not appeased and sent back to sleep with the ritual (atrociously killing 100 innocents) the volcano will explode (nothing else) destroying everything dozens of miles around. Now, to prevent this the heroes would have to go down into the depths of the volcano (lava, sulphur, etc.) and battle a creature from whom a TPK is most probable. So what? Add to this of course, all the problem with the Sarrukh. Those are entombed in suspended animation, but a tribe of some lizard creatures have been performing the rituals for millenaries on behalf of their sleeping masters. ETC., ETC., ETC.

Another good Volcano based dungeon is detailed very extensively in the old D&D module X8 Drums on Fire Mountain. Set on the tropical jungle island of Teki-Nura-Ria (easily placed near the coast of Chult/Tashalar region), the island is riddled with a huge dungeon complex built by a long vanished (or hibernating) race of elders, the ruins of their civilisation can be seen amidst the jungles and swamps on the surface.

I've run the adventure a few times now, my players have loved it every time. would seriously be worth your $4.99 to download as a pdf.

I’m probably going to take, and heavily adapt, Chaos Rising for the adventure. I will simply place the dwarf complex (they took it over from the sarrukh) inside the volcano, rather than off in a waste-land. I still need to determine how to include the sarrukh in the situation.
