RPG shops in Washington?

Just found out that through work I will be spending the rest of this week in Washington (I live in the UK). I fly out tomorrow morning so I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions for RPG shops while I'm over there?

If you have transportation, there's a WONDERFUL game store in Chantilly, VA, out in the suburbs, called the Game Parlor. It's a huge store with plenty of space for gaming.

Up in Maryland there's a place called Dream Wizards. I've only been there twice, but it's pretty good too... not as big, not as clean, not as well-stocked, but still quite good.

I don't know of any decent game stores downtown.

Despite the fact that Washington D.C. being a great city, there is a large void where a good gaming store should be. There are no gaming stores in the immediate downtown area. The only gaming store that has readily available public transportation (subway) to it is the WotC store in the mall at the Pentagon City station (yellow/blue line).

I'd avoid Dream Wizards since they're mostly incompetent and during the weekends the place wreaks of gamer b/o.

The Gaming Parlor in Chantilly (a semi-largely inconvenient hike from the downtown metro area, accessible AFAIK only by car. I've only driven there once and the traffic is always a bit hellish at any time of day you travel there.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but that's the :):):):)e state of affairs of gaming in the DC-Metro area. :(

Erekose - to get to Dream wizards you can take the Washington DC subway. Take the red line toward Shady Grove and get off at the White Flint Station. Its about a mile walk from the station. When you are at your hotel call the store for directions. I believe they have a web site with directions on it.

The one mile hike (IMO) is not worth the time or effort to get to. I mean, if you're a hardcore gamer desperate for a fix while you're away from home..ok.

But if you were just curious and were just planning on stopping by to take a looksee, spend your time taking in the sights and scenes in D.C.

The White Flint Metro station is in the heart of D.C. suburbia with little more than strip malls, regular malls and all that is over-congested in our little nook of the world. Like I said, take a stroll down on The Mall in downtown D.C, see the White House, Capitol, the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials. Go to all the museums on The Mall. The best ones (IMO) are the National Art Gallery, Air & Space Museum (*warning* TONS o' KIDS!), and the Museum of Natural History.

Did I mention the fact that all of the above are F-R-E-E!

I'm casting another vote for the Game Parlor in Chantilly. If you go early (the store opens at 10am) the traffic isn't bad. But I-66 is a flipping nightmare at other times (Northern Virginia needs extended metro service, but no one wants to pay for it). There are almost always pickup games you can join.

By the way. The Washington Post has a fantastic entertainment guide. http://eg.washingtonpost.com/ If it were me, I'd make a point of "touring" the bars in Adams Morgan (take a cab, parking's a nightmare) or going to one of the very many free activities we have here.

Tangentially...if you're looking for pubs:

I'd recommend either Ireland's Four Provinces (known to most as the 4 P's, it's uptown but about a 2 minute walk...or stagger to the subway) or on the other side of town (near Capitol Hill) The Dubliner or in midtown Kelly's Irish Times.

If you serious nightlife, salt of the earth/Mos Eisely kinda stuff, Adams Morgan is always a hoot. Madam's Organ is great. If you're the more trendy, sophisticate...head down to Georgetown. I'd recommend Third Edition.

Thanks for the comments!

I did mean Washington DC not Washington State . . . momentary lapse in concentration!

I'm not sure how much free time I'll have as I am over for a conference and at the weekend thought I'd do sightseeing with a dip into any game stores if they weren't too far off the beaten track.

Thanks again for the advice :)
