RPG Evolution: Hautico Church Houses and Ruins Terrain

Gothic terrain is a staple of a lot of tabletop role-playing games, including D&D and Warhammer, which is why there's lots of sets for sale like this one. This set offers a couple of ruined church buildings, designed for 18-28mm miniatures.

The detail is solid. There are plenty of nooks and crannies that will catch washes and help create those dramatic shadows and highlights when you paint them. The removable roofs are a nice touch, allowing you to place miniatures inside and add another layer of tactical depth to your games. The peg system for the roofs is also great, keeping them in place during gameplay.

The material used to print these terrain is PETG, a 3D-printed plastic. PETG has glossy finish that that is a bit out of place for ruined buildings, so it will definitely need to be painted. While PETG is durable, it's also clear that these pieces are 3D-printed, which means you can see some layer lines; if this bothers you, you'll need to do some cleanup before you prime and paint the pieces.

The value proposition is a bit of a sticking point. For 30 bucks, these pieces feel a overpriced for what they are, especially considering that they're 3D-printed and require some prep work. If you have a 3D printer yourself, you could potentially print similar pieces for a fraction of the cost. However, if you don't have a 3D printer and you're looking for some gothic terrain, these are a great choice.

I was looking for more crypts for a big graveyard scene in Ravenloft….perfect timing! I have the various Wizkids grave items and theses would add some diversity in the yard.

PETG is FDM, that means the 3D printing isn't done complete layer by complete layer, but each layer needs to be build by moving the nozzle. That takes time, so such a print may take MANY hours to complete at a reasonably decent quality. But why they printed in PETG instead of PLA is a complete mystery to me...

Nice resin terrain is very expensive these days (even if you 3D print it yourself). A company like Tabletop world previously sold resin cast HQ terrain pieces on their site, they are now stuck doing that via KS: https://www.kickstarter.com/project...-worlds-realm-of-altburg-cottages/description two simple cottages cost $80+shipping (and assembly required). Suddenly $30 bucks isn't so insanely priced. Are there better/cheaper prints out there? Probably, but this stuff isn't cheap anymore...

A single HIPS plastic (model kit plastic) chappel kit from GW costs $52: https://www.warhammer.com/en-US/shop/old-world-sigmarite-chapel-of-the-empire-2024
