Ring of Regeneration Question

Celtavian

Dragon Lord
It seems the new ring of regeneration seems kind of week to my buddies and I. Anyone know any errata on this item or know of any clarifications?

We are wondering the following:

Does the ring of regeneration provide actual regeneration? As in, is the wearer only able to be killed by fire or acid damage, death magic, disintegration, or poison and similar type attacks, or can they be killed by any means?

If it doesn't, it seems like a weak item and hardly worth the 90,000 gold it costs to buy or the cost of making one.

The explanation is fairly simple, but the ring seems underpowered for its cost in experience and gold if it does not provide the actual power of regeneration.

The ring heals 1 point of damage per level, per hour. Subdual damage is healed at 1 point per level per 5min. Limbs or organs lost while the ring is worn are regrown.

That's all you get.

You do not gain the Regeneration special quality. No attack forms are converted to subdual damage. Normal damage can kill you just fine. Note that the description specifies a "living wearer," so once you drop below -10 hp (or are killed by some other effect), the ring does you no good.

Nope. It grants only what it says.

I agree. In fact, you can legally construct a ring that grants a regeneration that is nearly identical to a Troll's. There is a spell in Magic of Faerun, otherwise known as The Big Book of Broken Magic for a Broken Campaign Setting, The only difference is that a Troll has regen 5, whereas the spell in question, Monstrous Regeneration (Clr 5), only gives regen 4. In my opinion, the cost of such an item wouldn't be as cheap as 90,000gp, even though the cost calcuation formula gives that price. I would make it more expensive myself, though how much more, I'm not sure. I'd have to think on it for a while.

When reading the rings ablities I have founds a crazy interpretation and reasoning for the 900000gp price. It states that if you lose a limb body part or organ your cast the Regeneration spell... since there is no single way to target limb body part or organ since second edition there has been no called shots unless DM has discression so consivibly damage would be the next course in which would effect a body part and that would trigger the spell going off. In closer inspection of the spell it provided 4d8+caster level of 15 hp thus concivibly the ring could every time struck cause you to heal a but ton of damage. Although conscrewing the rule this way makes it so that players go crazy go nuts and ussually a good of red dragon needs to stomp them but it could just work

Uh, the Regeneration spell is instantaneous, right? Thus there should be no way to have a continuous effect item made of it. Or are you arguing that it is use-activated and hence reactionary? Does that even work, pricewise?

Wow. Speaking of trolls... :\

Yeah, you didn't even mention the other Forgotten Realms spell that turns all damage you take into subdual damage. They work great as a combo! ;)
