Ring of Freedom of Movement Price...

Okay, DMG ring of freedom costs 40,000 gold pieces. It continually bestows the effect of the Freedom of Movement spell on the wearer. Freedom of Movement is a 4th level spell, it's cast at caster level 7, and lasts 10 minutes a level.

Looking in our guidelines, we see that the formula for the continuous bestowing of a 4th level spell at CL 7 with a 10 minute per level duration is:

4 x 7 x 2000 x 1.5 = 84000 gold pieces.

Did I miss something? Or is the ring of freedom of movement seriously underpriced?

(I'd like someone to find what makes it so cheap so I can make a similar item for Death Ward, heh heh)

You think the ring is underpriced...

Yes, not only is the ring of freedom of movement seriously underpriced by reference to the item creation rules, it's seriously underpriced by those rules!

Mind you, the most seriously underpriced magic items are metamagic rods. Find me a wizard who wouldn't immediately buy one if he had the cash ("Three empowered fireballs a day, forever, for 9000gp. Wait, maybe I'll only memorise two, and the cleric can use the remaining daily use of the rod for a cure serious wounds. Yeah, I'll be having that, thanks!").

Cheers, Al'Kelhar

You can think of the item pricing rules as having an implicit "handwave the whole thing if it doesn't make sense" at the end. Sometimes, this means that the price should be higher than what it comes out as (continuous divine favor, prot. evil, true strike, etc). Sometimes, it comes out lower.

Personally, I think the ring of FoM is a bit on the cheap side, but also not really worth spending 84000 gp on. For that amount, you could have items that give you multiple dim doors per day, effectively allowing you to achieve much the same end, and more besides.

IME its being able to move unrestricted through rivers of lava (adequately protected from fire, of course), and to avoid swimming at the bottom of the ocean while wearing armour, and similar.

More important than any formula guideline is the fact the magic items are supposed to be manually balanced, by careful consideration as to how they fit into the overall D&D universe. The designers felt this power was worth 40,000 gp, and that trumps any set of formulas that got suggested and tacked on after-the-fact.

The formulas are guidelines for DMs making up new items. They don't have any direct bearing on items that are part of the core rules.

You mentioned a Deathward-like Item

The best I could find that might help you with that is from the Book Of Exalted deeds.

The Soulfire Property for Armour & Shields.
It's a +4 bonus which replicates the Death Ward spell exactly.

How to price it on an item - I'm not sure.

By the by, the Freedom of Movement item is fairly priced in my opinion because it's not a necessity but it is a useful item. So players spend their gp's elsewhere first (AC, saves, weapons etc.) and then when they have "spare" cash they buy item's like this and the one your trying to create. Means it only really becomes available late on in the game.

Good luck with our DM!

Good mother of god.

So a +1 Soulfire Buckler costs 25K and duplicates the death ward spell?

Sign me up anyday.

Makes many undead a joke.

rendering oneself immune to [Death] descriptor and negative energy attacks makes undead a joke?

Here I thought it simply got rid of a horrible part of the game ;) A good deal of undead dont even use negative levels anyway, is there some part of the spell I am missing?
