ring of evasion and armor

Does a ring of evasion only work if you're wearing no armor or light armor? Gut feeling plus RBDM instinct equals "yes." I suspect there will be many unhappy clerics, though.

I would say the ability functions independant of what type of armor you wear. Notice how the monk and rogue abilities specify the restrictions to those class features, but the description of the magical item does not. It references the evasion ability, then goes on to describe the benefit of the magic item, "Whenever she makes a Reflex saving throw to determine whether she takes half damage, a successful save results in no damage."

Either way...just my 2 cp

The prevailing theory I have read, here and elsewhere, is that you can use the ring in any armor, UNLESS you are of a class that already has the Evasion class feature, as illogical as that may seem...

I find it difficult to believe that that is the prevailing theory. :uhoh:

But in any case, no, the evasion granted by a ring of evasion is not limited as the class abilities of rogues and monks are.

Those above have correctly answered the question, but I'm curious--with the mention of 'unhappy clerics', are there actually heavy-armour-wearing clerics out there that can make a competitive Reflex save in the first place? I would think a Ring of Evasion is wasted on a Cleric who wears heavy armour (it would probably be more useful for a Paladin, though, with the +Cha to saves).

I dunno. I was just thinking about how much I love to dump fireballs onto clerics.

This question is actually about a fighter running around in medium armor. Somehow he would be better off with a ring of evasion than with wishing for evasion. Or do you think a wished evasion would be somehow better than a rogue's class ability evasion?

I guess it depends on if he Wished for Rogue Evasion or Ring of Evasion Evasion (if unspecified, I'd probably go with the weaker of the two). It also depends on whether or not you allow characters to Wish for exclusive class abilities (I wouldn't if I were you--that way PrC qualification madness lies). If a PC Wished for Evasion in my game, they'd get a Ring of Evasion.

Personally, I wouldn't let a PC Wish for Evasion because Evasion is a metagame term that the PCs wouldn't know about -- to them, Fred the Rogue is just better at getting out of the way of things than Bob the Fighter. YMMV.
