Reveille's Modified Carrying Capacity Table

I find Table 9-1 on page 162 of the 3.5 D&D PHB to be a bit obtuse and the formula to be wacked out. I know the table jumps at times to properly reflect for higher strength scores and thusly is reflected in my modified table as well.

[/sblock]Animals that normally have a Strength of 1, now have a Strength of ½.
Animals are the only creature type that are allowed of Strength of ½.

This modified table is used in Tale of the Twin Suns.

The original formula didn't seem wacked out to me. It was a little distorted at the lower end (coudl be rewritten at that end for sure), but it was basically a logarithm function, in which the maximum load doubles every five points of strength.

The progression is actually rather simple: max load equals 10 x Strength score, for all Strengths up to 10. After that, it increases by 15, 20, etc., as Ash noted. Medium load is 2/3 of max load, and light load is 1/3.

I can see how you did it, though - you worked from the low end, multiplying the Strength score by 5; Strength 4 is x5 +1, 5 is x5 +2, etc.

Adding a 1/2 Strength is kind of odd - what happens if the animal gets Strength drained? How does it make a Strength check?

As a final note, I did a variation on the encumbrance tables myself awhile back, which tied into revised movement rules (linked on that page); I added an "unencumbered" category for PCs carrying only a few pounds of gear. Under this rule, you can run (x5) only if you're unencumbered; run x4 with a light load, x3 with medium, and x2 (hustle) with a heavy load.
